Liquid vs. Solid Fuel Switching Timing in the Wuling Climb: Gastric Emptying Changes for Every 500m of Altitude Gain

Why You Can’t Eat After the Later Stages of Wuling

Many riders report: “On the west approach, I can still eat rice balls at Cingjing (elevation 1750m), but by Cuifeng (2300m) I can’t swallow anything, and in the final stretch only cola goes down.” This isn’t a matter of willpower—it’s physiological delayed gastric emptying.

According to exercise physiology research, for every 500 meters of altitude gain:

  • Gastric emptying rate decreases by approximately 8–12%
  • Splanchnic blood flow redistribution decreases by 5–8%
  • Sympathetic nervous system excitability increases, inhibiting intestinal motility

Above 2000m, gastric emptying time extends from 60 minutes at sea level to 90–100 minutes. Retained solid food can trigger bloating, nausea, and even vomiting.

Five-Stage Fuel Switching Chart for the Wuling West Approach

Distance Elevation Segment Recommended Fuel Type Examples
0–15K 425–800m Puli to Wushe 70% Solid + 30% Liquid Rice balls, bananas, sports drink
15–25K 800–1750m Wushe to Cingjing 50% Solid + 50% Liquid Energy bars, energy gels, water
25–35K 1750–2300m Cingjing to Cuifeng 30% Solid + 70% Liquid Energy gels, jelly, sports drink
35–45K 2300–2900m Cuifeng to Yuanfeng 10% Solid + 90% Liquid Energy gels, cola, sugary sports drink
45–55K 2900–3275m Yuanfeng to Wuling 100% Liquid Cola, sports drink, sugar water

Altitude Suitability of Three Fuel Categories

1. Rice Balls, Bread (60–90 minutes to digest)

Suitable below 1800m. Advantage: high carbohydrate density (one rice ball contains about 50g of carbs), but requires plenty of water to aid digestion. Strongly not recommended above 2000m, because the blood flow consumed by digestion competes with working muscles.

2. Energy Gels, Energy Bars (20–40 minutes to digest)

Suitable at all altitudes, but above 2500m it’s recommended to take them with 200ml or more of water. Energy bars (such as Cliff Bar) become hard and difficult to chew in cold temperatures; above 2500m, energy gels or chews are a better choice.

3. Liquid Carbohydrates (drinks, cola, jelly drinks; 5–15 minutes to digest)

Excellent at all altitudes, especially above 2500m. Cola’s unique combination (caffeine + sugar + sodium + carbonation) quickly lifts alertness and neutralizes stomach acid, making it the best choice at high altitude.

The Key to Sugar Concentration: The 6–8% Rule

Whether solid or liquid, the optimal carbohydrate concentration for intestinal absorption is 6–8% (6–8g of carbs per 100ml). Common drink concentrations:

  • Cola / Sprite: 10.6% (recommend diluting 1:0.5)
  • Pocari Sweat: 6.2% (golden concentration)
  • Supau: 5.8% (slightly weak; can add 1 packet of energy powder)
  • 100% pure fruit juice: 11–13% (not recommended to drink straight)

Above 10%, gastric emptying is delayed and osmotic diarrhea can occur. If you bring cola for the later stages of Wuling, pour it into your bottle and dilute with water to 6%.

Race-Day Timeline (Example for Sub-4-Hour Riders)

Time Point Cumulative Distance Fuel Intake Cumulative Carbs
30 min before start 0K 1 rice ball + black coffee 50g
0:45 15K 1 banana + 250ml sports drink 90g
1:30 25K 1 energy gel + 250ml water 120g
2:00 32K Half an energy bar + 250ml sports drink 150g
2:30 38K 1 energy gel + 250ml water 180g
3:00 44K 250ml cola 210g
3:30 50K 1 energy gel + 250ml cola 250g
Finish 55K Post-race chocolate milk 280g

Emergency Protocol When Nausea Strikes

If nausea has already set in:

  1. Immediately stop solid fuel intake, switch to small 50ml sips of drink
  2. Suck on a mint or ginger candy to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system and soothe the stomach
  3. If necessary, stop and stand for 2–3 minutes to let gravity assist gastric emptying
  4. If accompanied by headache or blurred vision, be alert for altitude sickness and descend immediately

Conclusion

Wuling fueling is not about “the more, the better”—it’s about “giving the right form at the right time.” Remember one simple principle: the higher the altitude, the higher the liquid ratio, and keep sugar concentration at 6–8%—then the later stages won’t defeat you with nausea.
