The Truth About Breaststroke Kick: Ankle Eversion, the Catch, and Why It's "a Whip, Not a Frog"​

Breaststroke Speed Is Seventy Percent Legs

Freestyle and butterfly are propelled mainly by the arms, but breaststroke’s main propulsive force comes from the legs — and this is exactly where most swimmers perform worst. A common mistake is thinking of the breaststroke kick as a “frog opening and closing its legs,” which leads to flailing the thighs with the feet never flexed, generating a lot of drag but no propulsion.

Where Propulsion Actually Comes From: The Inner Sole and Inner Calf

The true propulsive surfaces of the breaststroke kick are the inner sole of the foot and the inner calf, which push water backward during the “squeeze” phase. For these surfaces to work effectively, you need:

  1. Dorsiflexion: after the recovery is complete, the toes flex up toward the shin so the foot can “catch” the water.
  2. Eversion: the toes turn outward so the inner sole faces backward.
  3. An outward-back-inward arcing sweep: not a straight backward kick, but an arc that scoops the water in toward the midline.

Without dorsiflexion and eversion, you’re simply sliding the top of your foot through the water with no propulsion at all — this is the root cause of “kicking hard but not moving forward.”

Recovery Timing and Body Position

Key principle: the recovery should be slow and small (to minimize drag), while the kick and squeeze should be fast and explosive (to generate propulsion). Slow recovery, fast kick — not the other way around.

Why It’s Said to Be “a Whip, Not a Frog”

Elite breaststrokers don’t kick with a wide, sweeping frog motion — their legs move in a compact, precisely-timed flex-and-turn, whip-like squeeze. The wider the knees splay, the larger the frontal projection of the thighs, and the higher the drag. The modern trend in breaststroke kicking is “narrow and precise,” relying on foot technique rather than how wide the legs open.

A 4-Week Correction Plan

  • Week 1 | On land: seated or prone dorsiflexion + eversion drills, 3×15 each, to build ankle control.
  • Week 2 | Kickboard breaststroke kick: 6×25 meters, deliberately recovering slowly, feeling the flex and turn, and squeezing explosively.
  • Week 3 | Vertical breaststroke kick: standing upright in deep water, using only the breaststroke kick to keep the head above water for 4×20 seconds, forcing an effective kick-and-squeeze.
  • Week 4 | Integration: swim full breaststroke, tracking stroke count over a fixed distance, aiming to reduce stroke count through improved leg efficiency.

Coach’s note: if your breaststroke feels slow no matter what, don’t worry about your arms first — check whether your feet are dorsiflexed during the recovery and everted during the kick. Ninety percent of “slow breaststroke” comes from the ankles not doing their job, not from weak legs.

Ankle mobility and control is the most overlooked yet most critical component of the breaststroke.
