Not Just Triathlon: Other Multisport Options
Multisport isn’t only triathlon. Aquabike (swim + bike) and Duathlon (run + bike + run) are two often-overlooked yet highly practical race formats—they serve both as alternatives for injured athletes and as standalone competitive disciplines.
Aquabike: For Those with Running Injuries or Who Fear Running
Aquabike consists of swimming + cycling, with no running leg. Common distances correspond to the swim and bike legs of a triathlon (e.g., 70.3 Aquabike = 1.9km swim + 90km bike).
Who it suits:
- Runners with recurring injuries (shin, plantar, knee) who still want to race long distances
- Experienced athletes “stepping down” from triathlon to maintain competitive fitness
- Those strong in swimming and cycling but weak in running, looking to play to their strengths
Tactically, without the concern of a final run leg, the bike leg can be ridden more aggressively—the pacing philosophy shifts from “saving something for the run” to “producing as much power as possible without blowing up.”
Duathlon: For Those Who Fear Water or Cannot Swim
The standard duathlon format is “run-bike-run,” e.g., a standard distance of roughly 10km run + 40km bike + 5km run. It removes the swim, making it the ideal starting point for the many people who want to get into multisport but are stuck on the swim.
Duathlon’s core challenges differ from triathlon:
| Challenge | Description |
|---|---|
| First run sets the intensity | Going out too hard on the first run can ruin the entire race (no swim warm-up buffer) |
| Two brick transitions | Run→bike and bike→run, each requiring a double muscle gear-shift |
| Second run is the most painful | With legs already taxed by running and cycling, the second run is where the race is truly decided |
Pacing discipline on the first run is the first commandment of duathlon: better to go slower than your target than to overheat in the opening leg.
Shared Training Carryover
- Aquabike training transfers almost entirely to the swim and bike legs of triathlon, making it an ideal substitute for maintaining fitness during a triathlon running injury layoff
- Duathlon’s emphasis on “running tolerance” and “run-bike bidirectional bricks” significantly benefits the final run leg of a triathlon
- Both have their own world championships and age-group qualification systems, making them worthy goals in their own right
When to Choose Them
- Injury layoff: choose Aquabike for running injuries, Duathlon for shoulder injuries/fear of water, to maintain fitness in two disciplines
- Entry transition: beginners who cannot swim can first experience multisport through Duathlon, then learn to swim and transition to triathlon
- Discipline development: if you find yourself “strong in two, weak in one,” rather than forcing triathlon, pursue better results in Aquabike/Duathlon
Coach’s perspective: The multisport world is broader than you think. Injury doesn’t have to mean sitting out, and fear of water doesn’t have to mean giving up—switch the race format, and you’re still in the game.
