The Physiology of Virtual Racing on Smart Training Platforms: Why Indoor FTP Is Often Higher Than Outdoors

裝備介紹

Your Indoor FTP and Outdoor FTP May Not Be the Same Number

Virtual racing platforms have made indoor training social and competitive, significantly boosting amateur athletes’ motivation and consistency. But they bring a frequently misunderstood phenomenon: the same person’s indoor and outdoor FTP often differ systematically, and treating the two as the same number contaminates the entire training load model (echoing the TSS/CTL and power meter themes).

Causes of Indoor vs. Outdoor FTP Differences

Factor Direction Mechanism
Heat dissipation Usually lowers indoor performance No wind cooling, core body temperature rises faster (echoing heat adaptation)
Flywheel inertia Changes feel and muscle recruitment Indoor inertia is simulated (echoing trainer theme)
Motivation/competitive stimulus May raise indoor output Virtual opponents trigger higher short-duration output
Measurement consistency Depends on device Indoor and outdoor devices differ, making values incomparable (echoing power meters)

Why the Direction Isn’t Fixed

The heat dissipation disadvantage tends to lower sustained indoor power (echoing the heat adaptation theme’s rise in core body temperature at the same intensity), but the motivation and adrenaline from virtual racing may raise short-duration output. The net effect varies by individual, by cooling conditions (with or without a strong fan), and by race format—which is precisely why you can’t assume “indoor and outdoor FTP are the same,” nor can you assume a fixed percentage difference.

The Right Approach: Establish Baselines Separately

Consistent with the principle that power meter absolute values are not comparable across devices (echoing the power meter theme), the most robust approach is to treat indoor and outdoor as two separate training environments, establishing FTP and training zones for each, and tracking trends separately. Directly applying a high FTP measured indoors to outdoor workouts will cause outdoor training to be chronically over-intense, sliding toward overreaching (echoing the overtraining continuum).

Rational Use of Virtual Racing Platforms

  • Leverage their community and competitive aspects to improve consistency—that’s their true value
  • Establish FTP and zones separately for indoor and outdoor, and track trends separately
  • Ensure strong cooling indoors to reduce distortion caused by heat load (echoing heat adaptation)
  • Interpret progress by comparing trends within the same environment; don’t compare absolute values across environments (echoing power meters)

The greatest contribution of virtual racing platforms is turning lonely indoor training into something with companionship, stakes, and motivation. But they also hide a trap: that FTP pushed out by virtual opponents, with no wind to cool you, may not be your outdoor FTP. Conflating the numbers from the two environments is like letting indoor excitement write your outdoor workouts. Those who use it well enjoy its social nature while staying clear-eyed, treating indoor and outdoor as two worlds that each need their own records.
