What Is Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia refers to the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. After adulthood, muscle mass declines at a significant rate roughly every decade, and the loss of strength and power outpaces the loss of muscle mass, with selective atrophy of Type II (fast-twitch) fibers being the most pronounced. It is not merely “getting thinner”—it is a comprehensive decline in strength, power, metabolic rate, and functional independence that, once it reaches a certain point, severely impacts daily life and athletic performance.
Why Endurance Athletes Should Be More Vigilant
A common blind spot: endurance athletes assume “I’m always moving, so I can’t get sarcopenia.” But pure aerobic training provides insufficient stimulus for maintaining muscle mass and strength (especially Type II fibers)—long-duration training primarily recruits and maintains slow-twitch fibers, while fast-twitch fibers still decline with age. The result: the aerobic base remains intact, but the strength foundation that climbing power, sprinting, and running economy depend on quietly crumbles, and the year-over-year decline in absolute performance is blamed on “just getting old.”

Mechanisms
Sarcopenia is driven by multiple factors: anabolic resistance (blunted synthetic response to the same protein and exercise stimulus), motor unit loss and neuromuscular junction degeneration, hormonal changes (declines in sex hormones and IGF-1), chronic low-grade inflammation, insufficient physical activity and protein intake, and energy deficiency. Among these, fast-twitch fibers are more sensitive to disuse and denervation due to their innervation characteristics, hence their selective atrophy.
Resistance Training: The Irreplaceable Prescription
The most strongly evidenced countermeasure is progressive resistance training: adequate load (must be challenging with progressive overload—not just light weight and high reps), covering major muscle groups, several times per week, sustained long-term. It can reverse some muscle mass loss, significantly improve strength and neuromuscular recruitment, and preferentially rescue the fast-twitch fiber characteristics that are most prone to loss. For endurance athletes, this translates directly into maintaining climbing power, sprinting, and economy. Explosive/speed-type movements (when safe) are especially important for preserving fast-twitch characteristics.
Protein and Energy Synergy
Resistance training must be paired with sufficient and well-distributed protein intake (in the higher range per kilogram of body weight daily, with each meal reaching a saturating dose and containing adequate leucine; see the articles on protein, menopause, and masters athletes) and adequate overall energy; chronic low energy availability accelerates muscle loss (related to RED-S). Practical Integration
- Upgrade resistance training from “when I have time” to a core component of the schedule alongside aerobic work (at least 2 sessions per week, progressive loading, major muscle groups plus some explosive movements).
- Don’t settle for “light weight, high reps”—insufficient stimulus cannot counter sarcopenia.
- The earlier you start, the better, but starting resistance training at any age yields significant benefits (older adults still respond strongly).
- Monitor absolute power/speed trends; if aerobic metrics look fine but power drops year after year, sarcopenia is often at work.
Running and riding alone won’t save your fast-twitch fibers. The most insidious thing about sarcopenia is that it leaves your aerobic base looking intact while quietly pulling out the strength foundation beneath your climbing and sprinting. For endurance athletes, strength work is not a supplement—it is the primary weapon against aging—and the sooner you pick it up, the better.
