Practical Application

  • Use a 6–10% carbohydrate solution (e.g., diluted sports drink or maltodextrin solution), swish for about 5–10 seconds, then spit it out.
  • During competition, repeat every few minutes at key high-intensity segments (e.g., before the final sprint, during a time trial).
  • For a fasted morning high-intensity session when you don’t want to eat, rinsing is a low-gastrointestinal-burden compromise.
  • Practice it in training first: confirm smooth execution without disrupting breathing or rhythm.

Integration with Overall Nutrition Strategy

Rinsing is not meant to replace existing fueling. In practice:

  • Short, intense events (road time trials, crits, short-distance triathlon run segments): rely primarily on rinsing to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort from swallowing too much when there’s no time to absorb it.

What It Proves Once Again
