A Counterintuitive Finding
The traditional rationale for carbohydrate intake during exercise is “providing fuel.” But a series of studies has found that during high-intensity exercise lasting about 1 hour, simply rinsing the mouth with a carbohydrate solution for a few seconds and spitting it out (without swallowing) can still improve performance (time trials, time to exhaustion)—the sugar never enters the digestive tract, so it cannot serve as fuel. This proves the benefit comes from the mouth’s detection signal for carbohydrates being transmitted to the brain, a central effect rather than metabolic energy supply.
Mechanism: Oral Receptors → Brain Reward and Motor Areas
The oral cavity contains receptors capable of detecting carbohydrates (including non-sweet maltodextrin, so it is not just sweet-taste receptors), and their signals feed into brain regions associated with reward, motivation, and motor control (such as the insula, anterior cingulate, and striatum). The brain “senses that energy is on the way,” downregulates perceived effort, and raises the tolerable recruitment level (consistent with the central fatigue framework; see related articles). Key supporting evidence: rinsing with artificial sweeteners has no such effect, indicating that what is detected is an “energy signal” rather than mere sweetness.

Core logic: the rinsing strategy is best suited for short-duration, high-intensity efforts, where heavy eating is inconvenient or unnecessary, or in a fasted/low-glycogen state. For long-distance endurance, glycogen depletion still requires actual carbohydrate intake; rinsing cannot replace energy supply.
Practical Application
- Use a 6–10% carbohydrate solution (e.g., diluted sports drink or maltodextrin solution), swish for about 5–10 seconds, then spit it out.
- During competition, repeat every few minutes at key high-intensity segments (e.g., before the final sprint, during a time trial).
- For a fasted morning high-intensity session when you don’t want to eat, rinsing is a low-gastrointestinal-burden compromise.
- Practice it in training first: confirm smooth execution without disrupting breathing or rhythm.
Integration with Overall Nutrition Strategy
Rinsing is not meant to replace existing fueling. In practice:
- Short, intense events (road time trials, crits, short-distance triathlon run segments): rely primarily on rinsing to avoid gastrointestinal discomfort from swallowing too much when there’s no time to absorb it.
- Medium-to-long distances: rinsing can assist in the early stages, but you still need to actually fuel according to carbohydrate intake recommendations to maintain glycogen (see the 90–120 g/h and glycogen supercompensation articles).
What It Proves Once Again
Carbohydrate rinsing is one of the cleanest pieces of evidence that “central fatigue and perceived effort can be manipulated”: nothing enters the stomach, yet the brain allows more effort because of a single signal—belonging to the same “work on the brain” performance-enhancing family as caffeine and self-talk.
Sometimes what you need isn’t more fuel—it’s convincing the brain that fuel is on the way. In short, hard races, swish a mouthful of sugar water for a few seconds and spit it out, and the brain that’s been hitting the brakes will ease off a little—this is the most magic-like yet best-supported trick in sports science.
