Many cyclists focus only on leg training while overlooking the importance of the core musculature. In fact, a strong core is the bridge that effectively transfers leg power to the pedals, and it is also the key to preventing lower back pain during long rides.

Why Cyclists Need Core Training

Power Transfer Efficiency

When riding, the force from every pedal stroke must travel through the pelvis and spine. Riders with an unstable core will experience “pelvic rocking” during pedaling, which not only wastes energy but also increases the risk of injury.

Research shows: 8 weeks of core training can improve a cyclist’s power output efficiency by 5-8%, without any change in leg training volume.

Maintaining Position During Long Rides

Weeks 6-8: Cycling-Specific Integration

Goal: Integrate core strength into the pedaling motion

Integration Training:

  • Single-leg squat (simulating pedal stroke): 3 sets × 10 reps/side
  • Standing core rotation: 3 sets × 15 reps/side
  • Suspended training in riding position (requires suspension straps): 3 sets × 30 seconds

Training Tip:
After each core session, spend 3 minutes on “active recovery riding” (easy pedaling on the trainer) to feel how your improved core changes your riding posture.
