Resupply Strategy

Resupply points on the Northern Cross-Island Highway are sparse, especially the roughly 30 km stretch from Baling to Mingchi, where there are almost no shops:

Location Resupply Type Notes
Dasi Convenience stores, restaurants Stock up fully
Fuxing Convenience stores, snack shops Last major resupply point
Baling Small grocery stores Opening hours may vary
Mingchi Forest recreation area restaurant Prices are higher
Cilan Villa restaurant Same as above
Yuanshan Convenience stores First resupply after descending

Recommendation: When departing from Fuxing, carry at least 3 hours’ worth of food and water.

Safety Precautions

  1. Rockfall Zones: Some sections of the Northern Cross-Island Highway are prone to rockfalls; watch for warning signs
  2. Large Vehicles: There are many dump trucks and tour buses; slow down before curves
  3. Changeable Weather: Afternoon rain is common in the mountains; carry a windbreaker
  4. Mobile Signal: Signal may be unstable between Baling and Mingchi
  5. Descent Safety: The eastern section’s descent is long and steep; make sure your brakes are reliable
