Both Called Triathlon, Yet Fundamentally Different
The World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Olympic distance is draft-legal (legal pack riding on the bike), while Ironman/70.3 is non-drafting (individual time trial). These two race formats produce two completely different types of athletes.
Core Differences at a Glance
| Dimension | Draft-legal (WTCS) | Non-drafting (IM/70.3) |
|---|---|---|
| Nature of cycling | Pack tactics race | Individual time trial |
| Key abilities | Explosive power, drafting, bike handling | Sustained threshold power |
| Equipment | Primarily road bikes | TT bike + aero components |
| Importance of swimming | Extremely high (lose the pack, lose the race) | Moderate |
| Running style | 5/10km sprint-style | Half/full marathon pace |
Draft-legal’s Decisive Factor: Swim Exit Position
In a draft-legal race, if you exit the swim 30 seconds behind the lead pack, you could lose over a minute on the bike and struggle to catch back. That’s why elite short-distance athletes invest far more in swimming than long-distance athletes.
Non-drafting’s Decisive Factor: Sustainable Power
With no pack to shelter behind, the bike leg is a pure individual battle against wind resistance. FTP and aero position determine everything; tactics play a minimal role.
Training Approach Recommendations
- Going draft-legal: high-intensity intervals, group riding skills, swim speed, 5–10km run pace
- Going non-drafting: FTP zones, long steady aerobic work, aero position tolerance, nutrition practice
The Fundamental Difference in Bike Power Distribution
The power curve in draft-legal is “jagged”: cruising in the pack requires only ~60% FTP, but cornering, moving up, and chasing back demand sudden 8–15 second bursts of 400W+, with 40–60 anaerobic surges over the entire ride and a VI as high as 1.15–1.25—it’s a test of repeated anaerobic capacity. Non-drafting, by contrast, pursues a “dead flat” output with a VI of 1.03–1.06; every unnecessary acceleration is borrowing from your run. A 250W FTP athlete racing draft-legal should train 30/30 intervals and cornering skills; racing non-drafting, they should train rock-steady 2×30 minute sweet spot efforts.
Failure Modes of the Two Race Formats
| Race Format | Typical Breaking Point | Root Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Draft-legal | Missing the lead pack on the swim | Insufficient swim speed; no matter how strong the bike, you can’t catch back |
| Draft-legal | Dropped by the pack on the run | Energy saved on the bike wasn’t converted into run speed |
| Non-drafting | Hitting the wall in the marathon | Bike VI too high, IF too aggressive |
| Non-drafting | Aero position fails | Insufficient tolerance training; sitting up mid-race costs 15W |
I often advise athletes not to chase both. Draft-legal trains “sprint-type endurance,” while non-drafting trains “time-trial-type endurance.” Figure out which one you want to play, and your training won’t end up a jack of all trades, master of none.
