Introduction

Training without an annual plan is like a ship without a navigation chart—no matter how hard you work, you may still take the long way around. This article provides a complete 52-week training template with the September Wuling Challenge as the A-priority goal, covering scheduling arrangements common among Taiwanese cyclists. After reading this article, print it out and stick it in front of your trainer—this will be your training bible for the coming year.

Weight Planning

Weight matters for climbing races:

  • Jan–Feb: Start losing weight, 0.3–0.5 kg per week
  • Mar–Apr: Continue losing weight until 90% of target
  • May–Jun: Reach target weight
  • Jul–Aug: Maintain weight, stop cutting
  • Sep: Race day ±0.5 kg

Practical Advice

First, write the 52-week plan in broad strokes first, then fill in details—plan the precise schedule for the next month at the beginning of each month. Second, keep flexibility: work, family, and weather will disrupt the plan; executing 80% of it is already a success. Third, do a self-review once a month: CTL trend, FTP changes, weight, and mood. Fourth, you only have 1–2 A-priority races—everything else is B-priority or C-priority, so don’t treat every race as a big deal. Fifth, the winter off-season cannot be skipped—start resting in November so you can explode during the build phase next May.

Conclusion

An annual plan is not a constraint; it is a “map for cashing in your goals.” Stick these 52 weeks on the wall, execute weekly, review monthly, adjust quarterly—on next September’s Wuling race day, you will stand higher than you do today. Remember: “Plan the work, work the plan”—plan the work, execute that plan, and that is the beauty of discipline in road cycling training. Starting today, week 1 begins tomorrow.
