Introduction
Block Periodization (BP) was formally proposed by Russian sports scientist Vladimir Issurin in the 1980s, and his 2008 book Block Periodization: Breakthrough in Sports Training established it as the training paradigm for modern elite sport. Its core concept is: to concentrate stimulation on a single ability within a short period, forcing the body to produce a strong adaptation.
Why Is Traditional Periodization No Longer Enough?
Issurin observed that modern elite athletes need to compete in multiple major events per year, and traditional linear periodization—“peaking only once a year”—can no longer meet those demands. At the same time, elite athletes show diminishing responses to mixed stimuli, requiring more concentrated, deeper single-target stimulation.
The Three Phases of Block Periodization
BP divides the training cycle into three blocks, each lasting 2–4 weeks:
| Block Type | English | Training Goal | Primary Ability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accumulation | Accumulation | Build aerobic + strength base | Z2, muscular strength |
| Transmutation | Transmutation | Convert the base into event-specific ability | Z3–Z4, threshold |
| Realization | Realization | Race intensity and tapering | Z5, nervous system |
The three blocks form a Mesocycle, typically 8–12 weeks, which can be repeated 3–4 times within a season.
Differences from Linear Periodization
- Linear: one macrocycle per year, abilities developed simultaneously
- Block: multiple mesocycles, abilities developed one at a time in a concentrated manner
- The “Residual Effect” is key to block training: aerobic capacity can be maintained for 25–30 days, muscular strength for 15–20 days, which makes switching between blocks possible
Research Directions
A 2014 study by Rønnestad et al. published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports showed that cyclists using BP improved VO2max by 8.8%, significantly better than the 3.7% seen in the traditional training group. Issurin’s years of empirical evidence also confirm BP’s advantages in rowing, track and field, and cycling.
Practical Recommendations
- Block length: 2–3 weeks is optimal; by the end of week 3 you are close to the overloading edge
- Accumulation: 12–18 hours per week, 80% Z2
- Transmutation: 8–12 hours per week, add 3 SST/threshold sessions
- Realization: 6–8 hours per week, 2 VO2max sessions + race intensity
- Insert 5–7 days of tapering between blocks to avoid overtraining
Conclusion
Block Periodization suits advanced riders with ample training time and high self-discipline. If you have been training for more than 3 years, have complete power meter data, and can precisely manage your own intensity zones, BP can deliver significant breakthroughs. Beginners are still advised to build a foundation with linear periodization.
