Yushan Main Trail, Xue Mountain Main and East Peaks, Central Mountain Range Traverse: Route Characteristics and Gear Adjustments

裝備介紹

Introduction

Having all the gear doesn’t mean it works for every route. The three routes—Snow Mountain Main Peak/East Peak, Yushan Main Trail, and the Northern Section 3 of the Central Mountain Range—differ completely in duration, terrain, weather, and resupply points, so gear configurations should differ as well. This article analyzes them from a practical standpoint.

Snow Mountain Main/East: A Two-Day Classic for Beginners

Features: Well-maintained trails, mountain huts (Qika, 369), 22 km distance, 1,700 m total elevation gain.

Gear Priorities:

  • Backpack: 45–50L is sufficient
  • Tent: Not needed—stay in mountain huts
  • Sleeping bag: Comfort rating of 5°C is enough (huts have beds)
  • Footwear: Mid-cut with Vibram Megagrip
  • Food: 2 days of lightweight provisions

Special Notes: Watch for falling rocks on the cirque scree slope—a helmet is recommended; after November, icy conditions are possible in winter, so prepare aluminum 10-point crampons before summiting.

Yushan Main Trail: The Altitude Challenge

Features: 3,952 m—the highest peak in Taiwan, strong winds at the summit, Paiyun Lodge available.

Gear Priorities:

  • High-altitude insulation: Down jacket (800 FP+)
  • Mid-cut boots (mainly rocky trails)
  • Headlamp with long battery life (summit push at 2 AM)
  • UV-protective sunglasses (near 4,000 m)
  • Windproof balaclava

Special Notes: Paiyun Lodge requires a lottery for reservations; water sources are unreliable, so bring a 2L capacity plus a filter.

Central Mountain Range Traverse (Northern Section 3): The Ultimate Test

Features: 7–9 days, no resupply, requires crossing arrow bamboo forests, remote wilderness. A representative segment is Taroko → Dashuiku.

Gear Priorities:

  • Backpack: 65–75L heavy load
  • Tent: 3-season double-wall (shared among multiple people)
  • Sleeping bag: Comfort rating of -5°C (strong mountain winds at night)
  • Footwear: High-cut with stiff soles (carrying 18 kg+)
  • Food: 800 g per day × 7 days = 5.6 kg
  • Water filter: Essential
  • Satellite device (Garmin inReach): Essential

Special Notes: Weather risk is high; confirm arrangements with GPS tracking devices, insurance, and a designated contact person. Phones have no signal in the wilderness.

Common Essential Gear

Regardless of route:

  • Headlamp + spare batteries
  • First aid kit (including hemostatic, bandaging, pain relief, antihistamines)
  • Rain jacket + rain pants + gaiters
  • Trekking poles (two recommended)
  • Whistle (for emergency signaling)
  • Map and power bank

Food Planning by Route

Short trips: Can bring more refined foods (canned goods, jerky)
Medium trips: Focus on dry rations and energy bars
Long trips: Freeze-dried meals, rice/noodle staples + trail snacks (3,500–4,500 kcal per day)

Practical Advice

Allocate your budget according to the route:

  • Snow Mountain Main/East kit: NT$30,000 can cover it
  • Yushan Main Trail: NT$35,000 (add insulation layers)
  • Northern Section 3: NT$60,000 and up (backpack, tent, satellite device)

Conclusion

Buying gear isn’t about getting everything at once—it’s about progressing with your routes. Start with Snow Mountain Main/East and Yushan as entry points, build up your gear, then take on Nenggao Andongjun and Southern Section 3. The successful experience of each route will tell you what to upgrade next.
