70.3 Wetsuit Thickness and Regulations: How to Choose for Kenting Sea Temperature

賽事分析

Introduction

A wetsuit is a tool for 70.3 athletes to “save energy and gain speed,” but IRONMAN has strict regulations on water temperature and thickness. Combined with the significant variability of water temperatures in Taiwanese waters, the choice and timing of wearing one require careful assessment.

IRONMAN 70.3 Wetsuit Regulations

Water Temperature Wetsuit Rule
≤ 16.1°C Mandatory (full coverage recommended)
16.1–24.5°C Permitted
24.6–28.8°C Age-group may wear (not eligible for rankings) / Pro not permitted
> 28.8°C Prohibited

Note: Maximum thickness limit is 5 mm.

Kenting Sea Temperature and Selection

  • March: Sea temperature approx. 22–24°C, most can wear a wetsuit
  • April: Sea temperature approx. 23–25°C, some races permit it
  • May onwards: Sea temperature rises, may switch to swimskin
  • Check the race briefing announcement before the race; don’t rely on experience

Wetsuit Thickness Classification

Body Part Common Thickness Function
Chest/Abdomen 4–5 mm Increased buoyancy
Thighs 4 mm Propulsion assistance
Calves 2–3 mm Maintains kicking flexibility
Shoulders 1.5–2 mm Stroke mobility

Full Sleeve vs. Sleeveless vs. Swimskin

  • Full sleeve wetsuit: Best buoyancy and insulation
  • Sleeveless wetsuit: Less stuffy, more shoulder flexibility
  • Swimskin: Speed choice when water temperature exceeds wetsuit regulations

Wearing and Training Key Points

  1. Train in a wetsuit at least 3 times before the race (including open water)
  2. Allow 8–10 minutes for putting it on to avoid tearing it by force
  3. Use bodyglide on the neck, armpits, and ankles to prevent chafing
  4. Practice the T1 removal motion: unzip → pull down to waist → squat and peel off legs

Practical Advice

  • For a first purchase, a sleeveless wetsuit is more beginner-friendly
  • Coastal training can help verify thickness and adaptability
  • Confirm the wetsuit rules in the race briefing before making plans
  • If skipping the wetsuit, switch to swimskin training 4 weeks in advance

Conclusion

A wetsuit isn’t better because it’s more expensive—it’s better because it “fits your body and the race regulations.” Water temperatures in the Kenting area carry uncertainty, so read the race briefing early and prepare a two-scenario race plan (with/without wetsuit) so you can enter the water calmly and confidently on race day.
