Basketball Annual Periodization Template: A Complete Training Blueprint from Off-Season to Finals

單車訓練

Introduction

Scattered weight training, playing ball, and running are far less effective than systematic periodized training. NSCA-certified coaches all use the “Macro-Meso-Micro” three-tier framework to plan the entire year. This article integrates the previous 24 articles in this series to provide basketball players with a full-year periodization template.

Annual Macrocycle

Phase Months Focus Duration
Off-season Apr-May Active recovery 4-8 weeks
General preparation Jun-Jul Strength foundation 8 weeks
Specific preparation Aug-Sep Power + conditioning 8 weeks
Pre-season Oct Integration and refinement 4 weeks
In-season Nov-Feb Maintenance + recovery 16 weeks
Peak season Mar Peak + mental 4 weeks

Mesocycle Example: 8 Weeks Pre-Season

Week Theme Intensity
1-2 Adaptation + technique Medium
3-4 Strength development High
5-6 Power conversion High
7 Integration and simulation Medium-high
8 Pre-season taper Low

Microcycle: A Typical Week

  • Monday: Lower-body strength + jumping
  • Tuesday: Upper-body strength + SAQ
  • Wednesday: Skill training + shooting
  • Thursday: Lower-body power + scrimmage
  • Friday: Upper-body accessory + core
  • Saturday: Practice or rest
  • Sunday: Full recovery

Annual Time Allocation for the Five Key Components

  • Strength training: 25-30% of total time
  • Power training: 15-20%
  • Agility SAQ: 15-20%
  • Cardio and conditioning: 15-20%
  • Skill training: 15-25%
  • Recovery and flexibility: Daily

Fitness Testing Checkpoints

  • Early June: Baseline testing (vertical jump, 5-10-5, Yo-Yo)
  • Late August: Post-strength-phase testing
  • Early October: Pre-season peak fitness testing
  • January: Mid-season monitoring
  • March: End-of-season comprehensive evaluation

Practical Recommendations

  • Coaches should plan at least 2 macrocycles to see systematic benefits
  • Do not stop training completely in the off-season; at least 2 low-intensity sessions per week
  • In-season maintenance is harder than expected; reduce unnecessary training volume
  • Record and compare fitness testing data every year
  • Individual players can make minor adjustments within the larger framework

Conclusion

Effort without planning is wasted; effort with planning is training. By establishing a full-year periodization framework, HBL coaches no longer have to guess what to train each week, and UBA players can also know what they should be doing each month. May this template help Taiwanese basketball move toward a more professional direction.
