When executed correctly, a deload week often allows your performance in the next training cycle to jump up a notch.

Why You Need a Deload Week

Under continuous training stimulus, the human body produces two types of adaptation:

  1. Positive adaptation: Muscle strengthening, improved aerobic capacity, enhanced neuromuscular efficiency
  2. Fatigue accumulation: Accumulation of micro muscle damage, depletion of energy systems, nervous system stress

During continuous training, fatigue often accumulates faster than positive adaptations become apparent. In other words, you may have become stronger, but you cannot feel it—because fatigue is “masking” your progress.

Some runners feel that “training less means losing fitness” and only reduce by 10–15%, failing to sufficiently dissipate fatigue.

Mistake 3: Packing too many activities into a deload week
Using the lighter training schedule to go hiking, play ball games, or move house completely cancels out the effect of the deload.

Mistake 4: Deloading too frequently
Deloading every 2 weeks means positive training adaptations have not been fully established before easing off prematurely, resulting in poor overall training efficiency.

Deload Week Recommendations for Taiwanese Runners

Climate considerations:
Taiwan’s hot and humid summer period (June–September) is itself an additional physiological stressor. It is recommended to incorporate more frequent deloads during this period (every 3 weeks), or to reduce overall summer training volume.

Psychological aspect:
Many Taiwanese runners equate “training less” with “laziness,” and this mindset is the biggest obstacle. It is recommended to add more technical work during the low-volume training of a deload week (cadence drills, running form correction) so the mind feels like “progress is being made.”

Practical Recommendations

  • Mark deload weeks in your training plan in advance; do not wait until you feel exhausted to decide on the spur of the moment
  • A deload week is “actively designed,” not something forced by injury or a busy schedule
  • HRV typically rises significantly at the end of a deload week—this is a signal that supercompensation has begun
  • Sleep and nutrition should still be maintained during a deload week; this is a prerequisite for maximizing supercompensation
