BB Bottom Bracket Removal and Bearing Maintenance Complete Guide

Introduction

Many Taiwanese cyclists who hear a “creaking” noise while pedaling immediately suspect the pedals or chain, but overlook the bottom bracket (BB). BB bearings endure constant rotational and lateral forces from pedaling, and when combined with Taiwan’s high-humidity climate, wear can occur quite quickly.

Road bike BB specifications vary widely, and different specifications require different tools. Using the wrong tool to force removal or installation can easily damage the frame or BB threads. This article helps you identify BB specifications and correctly perform maintenance procedures.

Identifying Mainstream BB Specifications

Specification Features Common Applications
BSA (English Thread) Threaded, left side is reverse-threaded, right side is standard-threaded Mainstream for aluminum frames
ITA (Italian Thread) Threaded, both sides are standard-threaded Some Italian brands
PF30 Press-fit, BB outer diameter 46 mm, inner diameter 30 mm Mid-to-high-end carbon frames
BB86/92 Press-fit, outer diameter 41 mm, commonly used by Shimano Trek, Specialized, etc.
T47 Threaded press-fit, combines advantages of threaded and press-fit New-generation design
BB30 Press-fit, outer diameter 42 mm, inner diameter 30 mm Some racing frames

If you’re unsure about your BB specification, ask the shop where you bought the bike or check the frame manual. The model number is usually marked on the outer wall of the BB shell.

Removal and Installation Tools

  • BSA BB tool: Park Tool BBT-22 (for Shimano Hollowtech II) or BBT-69 (adjusting cup)
  • Press-fit BB removal tool: Park Tool RT-1 removal tool or Wheels Manufacturing models
  • Press-fit BB installation tool: BBP-22.2 or compatible tool; ensure both sides are pressed in simultaneously and evenly
  • Torque wrench: Shimano Hollowtech II BB cups require approximately 35–50 Nm tightening torque

In Taiwan, these can be purchased at the bicycle parts street on Bade Road in Taipei, Jingming 1st Street in Taichung, or from various online retailers.

BSA Threaded BB Removal and Installation Steps

Removal Steps

  1. Remove the crankset first: For Shimano Hollowtech II, use a 5 mm hex wrench to loosen the crank arm fixing bolt, push aside the retaining clip, and easily pull off the left crank arm.
  2. The right-side BB cup (drive side) has left-hand threads (tightened counterclockwise), so it must be turned clockwise to remove. This is the most common mistake beginners make.
  3. The left-side BB cup (non-drive side) has standard threads and is loosened counterclockwise.
  4. Clean old grease and debris from inside the BB shell.

Installation Steps

  1. Apply an appropriate amount of thread grease (or Loctite 243 medium-strength threadlocker to prevent loosening) to the BB cup threads.
  2. First thread the BB cup in by hand to confirm proper thread engagement, then tighten with the tool.
  3. After confirming both left and right BB cups are fully tightened, reinstall the crankset and tighten the crank bolts to Shimano specifications (usually 12–15 Nm).

Press-Fit BB Precautions

Press-fit BB installation requires specialized tools to ensure proper alignment of both sides. Hammering it in directly can cause:

  • Misaligned BB bearings, resulting in immediate creaking noises while pedaling
  • Damage to the BB shell on carbon frames (irreparable)
  • The BB becoming impossible to remove once installed

For press-fit BBs on carbon frames, it is strongly recommended to have a bike shop perform the installation to ensure proper tool alignment and even force application.

Bearing Noise Diagnosis

Pedaling noise doesn’t always come from the BB. The following troubleshooting steps help pinpoint the source:

  1. No noise when pedaling out of the saddle, but noise when seated → Saddle rails or seatpost may be loose
  2. Noise on both pedal strokes, synchronized with pedaling cadence → BB or pedal bearings
  3. Noise when turning the cranks by hand after removing the pedals → BB bearing wear
  4. Noise appears after reinstalling pedals → Pedal bearing issue

Practical Recommendations

  • BSA-spec BBs typically need replacement every 5,000–8,000 km or every 1–2 years. Given Taiwan’s rainy climate, it’s recommended to shorten this to 1 year.
  • Shimano OEM BBs such as the SM-BB52 (for 105) or SM-BB71-41B offer good value, priced around NT$400–800 in Taiwan.
  • If a press-fit BB repeatedly develops noise, consider converting to a threaded BB adapter kit (such as the Wheels Manufacturing Threaded Conversion), which addresses press-fit noise at the root. High-end bike shops in Taiwan can install this for you.

Conclusion

BB maintenance is one of the more technically demanding tasks in road bike upkeep, but as long as you identify the correct specification and use the appropriate tools, it can be done safely. BSA threaded BBs are the most common specification in Taiwan and are worth taking the time to learn to service yourself. For press-fit BBs, however, it’s recommended to have a properly equipped bike shop handle the job to protect the frame structure.
