The Right Mindset for Riding in the Rain
In Taiwan, especially in the north, if you only ride on sunny days, you’ll lose about a third of the year to missed training. Learning to ride safely in the rain isn’t just about training—it’s a practical survival skill.
The Risks of Riding in the Rain
- Slippery Roads: Reduced grip, especially on road markings, manhole covers, and fallen leaves
- Poor Visibility: Rain blurs your vision and also affects how well other road users see you
- Longer Braking Distances: Rim brakes lose significant stopping power in wet conditions
- Dropping Body Temperature: Wind chill makes the perceived temperature far lower than the actual temperature
- Mechanical Issues: The drivetrain and brakes are more prone to problems
Essential Gear
Clothing
- Waterproof Windbreaker: Breathable waterproof material (Gore-Tex or similar)
- Shoe Covers: To keep your feet dry and warm (Neoprene is best)
- Visor Cap: Worn under the helmet to keep rain out of your eyes
- Long-Finger Gloves: For grip and warmth
- Goggles: Clear or yellow lenses to keep rain out of your eyes
The Bike
- Fenders: Front and rear fenders drastically reduce spray
- Front and Rear Lights: High-brightness flashing mode so other road users can see you
- Wider Tires: 28mm or wider provides better grip
- Lower Tire Pressure: Drop 5-10 psi to increase the contact patch
Rain Riding Techniques
Cornering
- Slow Down Before the Turn: Ride 20-30% slower than usual
- Keep the Bike Upright: Reduce your lean angle
- Avoid Road Markings and Manhole Covers: These are extremely dangerous in the rain
- Look Where You Want to Go: Keep your eyes on your intended line
Braking
- Brake Early: Stopping distance is 50-100% longer than on dry roads
- Use Both Brakes: Distribute braking force evenly
- Don’t Brake Suddenly: Apply pressure progressively
- Rim Brake Technique: Lightly squeeze the brakes first to wipe water off the rim, then apply full braking force
Route Selection
- Avoid major roads (more traffic, more spray)
- Choose routes with good asphalt quality
- Avoid construction zones (lots of mud and sand)
- Prioritize familiar routes (you know where the potholes are)
Post-Ride Maintenance
Immediate Care
- Wipe down the frame and components with a dry cloth
- Pay special attention to the brake areas and drivetrain
- Clean and lubricate the chain
- Check brake pads/shoes for wear
Same-Day Care
- Rinse the underside of the bike with water (to remove mud and sand)
- Re-apply lubricant
- Hang dry your jersey and shoes (stuff with newspaper to speed up drying)
- Check tires for embedded debris
Rainy Day Alternatives
If the rain is too heavy or you don’t want to take the risk:
- Indoor Trainer: Zwift or TrainerRoad offer interactive workouts
- Core Training: Use rainy days for strength and flexibility work
- Recovery Day: Letting your body rest is also part of training
Safety Rules
- Don’t Ride in Thunderstorms: The risk of lightning isn’t worth it
- Visibility Below 50 Meters: Consider stopping and waiting it out
- Flooded Sections: If you can’t judge the depth, go around or get off and walk
- Tell Family Your Route: The risk of accidents is higher in the rain
