This may seem like a matter of personal preference, but sports science research reveals that the focus of attention has a measurable and significant impact on running performance. The so-called “running feel” largely depends on where you choose to place your attention.
Defining Internal Focus vs External Focus
Sports psychology divides the direction of attention during running into two broad categories:
Internal Focus (Association)

- Second half of race, sprint segments: Switch to fully internal focus, concentrating on breathing rhythm, cadence efficiency, and pain management

The Psychological Mechanism of Running with Music
Many Taiwanese runners are accustomed to running with earphones, which psychologically serves as an external focus tool. Research shows that synchronized music (with rhythm matched to cadence) can lower perceived exertion (RPE) by approximately 10% and enhance running enjoyment. However, other studies indicate that during high-intensity segments of a race, music may interfere with pace perception, causing runners to unconsciously run faster in the first half.
Suggested strategy:
- Easy training runs: Use music, external focus, enjoy the running
- Interval training: No music, practice pure internal focus
- Race: Music can be used in the first half; in the second half (especially the final 8 km), remove the earphones and switch to fully internal focus
The Connection Between Mindfulness Awareness and Attention Training
Mindfulness meditation training is an effective tool for improving attention-switching ability. Practicing 10 minutes of breathing meditation regularly can train the brain to more flexibly choose attentional targets and reduce habitual attentional drift from “zoning out.”
Practical approach: 2 to 3 times per week, select a 3-to-5-minute “music-free pure perception segment” during a run, focusing on the kinesthetic details of each step—the heel-to-toe transition, the amplitude of arm swing, and the depth and rhythm of breathing.
Practical Recommendations
- Record the focusing strategy used in each session in your training log, along with the corresponding RPE (rating of perceived exertion)
- Schedule at least 2 “music-free attention training runs” per month to deliberately practice internal focus ability
- Plan your attentional strategy for different race phases before race day, just as specifically as you plan your fueling
- Discuss your focusing habits with fellow runners and find the combination that works best for you from different strategies
