The Final 3 Kilometers: Where Dreams and Nightmares Meet

If the 2026 Tour de Taiwan has one memorable “tradition,” it’s the crashes before the finish line. Of the five stages, at least three (Stages 1, 3, and 4) saw crashes within the final 3 kilometers.

This is no coincidence—it’s a structural issue inherent to road cycling.

Why Are the Final 3 Kilometers the Most Dangerous?

Picture this scenario:

  • 70–100 riders
  • Packed onto a road 6–8 meters wide
  • Speeds accelerating from 45 km/h to 65+ km/h
  • Everyone fighting for the best sprint position
  • Adrenaline surging, risk assessment plummeting

It’s like cramming 70 sports cars onto a two-lane road and telling everyone: “Start accelerating in the final 3 kilometers—first one there takes the prize.” It would be more surprising if no one crashed.

The UCI 3 km Rule

Precisely because crashes before the finish are so frequent and hard to avoid, the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) established the famous “3 km rule”:

Riders affected by a crash or mechanical failure within the final 3 kilometers of a stage will be credited with the same finishing time as the group they were in at the time of the incident.

The core spirit of this rule is: Don’t let luck (or bad luck) decide the general classification.

The Three Crashes at the Tour de Taiwan

Stage 1 – Taipei (Final 3 km)

  • Cause: Hitting a course traffic cone at high speed
  • Riders affected: Lu Shao-hsuan (Taiwan team captain), Hung Kun-hung, and several others
  • Result: All affected riders received the main peloton’s time; the general classification was unaffected
  • Aftermath: Lu Shao-hsuan’s competitiveness in subsequent stages was impacted

Stage 3 – Kaohsiung (Final 3 km)

  • Cause: Contact during the peloton’s high-speed sprint
  • Riders affected: Multiple riders
  • Result: The 3 km rule applied; times were credited to the main peloton

Stage 4 – Pingtung

  • Situation: A 74-rider mass sprint—tense but relatively incident-free
  • Rajovic’s sprint speed: 71 km/h

Why Can’t It Be Avoided?

Some might ask: “If it crashes every time, why not find a way to prevent it?”

The answer is: This is the nature of road cycling.

Unlike track cycling with its standardized velodrome, road races feature endlessly varying conditions:

  • Inconsistent road surfaces
  • Different corner angles
  • Various obstacles along the roadside
  • Wind direction changing at any moment
  • Other riders’ movements being unpredictable

Advances in Safety Measures

Although crashes cannot be completely eliminated, cycling has made significant safety progress in recent years:
