Andrea D'Amato: The Bronze Medalist of the Tour de Taiwan, Always on the Podium

The Perennial Third-Place Finisher

If Paul Hennequin is the “eternal runner-up,” then Andrea D’Amato is the “perpetual third.” The Italian rider for Team Ukyo displayed a baffling consistency in the 2026 Tour de Taiwan—regardless of the stage, he was almost always on the podium.

Notice anything? His results almost always fall within the 3-4 range. This kind of consistency is an anomaly in the cycling world—most riders’ performances fluctuate like an electrocardiogram, but D’Amato is like a straight line.

Why Always Third?

There are a few possible reasons:

1. He is a good sprinter, but not among the very best

Among the sprinters in the Tour de Taiwan, Rajovic has the most explosive power, and Hennequin has the best sustained acceleration. D’Amato sits somewhere in between—good enough to beat 95% of the field, but always falling just a little short in the final 50 meters.

2. Team Ukyo’s lead-out capabilities are limited

Compared to Lotto-Intermarche’s world-class lead-out train, Team Ukyo can offer relatively limited support in the run-in to the finish. D’Amato often has to find his own position, which is a significant disadvantage in the final melee.

3. He is too consistent

That sounds like a strength, but in a sprint, “consistent” sometimes means “not crazy enough.” The very best sprinters enter a near-frenzied state in the final 200 meters—forgetting risk, forgetting fatigue, leaving only pure speed. D’Amato might be too rational.

The Value of Third Place

Don’t underestimate third place. In a race of 177 riders, stepping onto the podium means you’ve beaten 99% of your opponents.

Moreover, the cumulative effect of consistent third-place finishes on points is remarkable. D’Amato has long ranked in the top three on the sprint points classification (38 points, just 2 behind Grisel and 1 behind Hennequin), coming close to snatching the green jersey.

Team Ukyo’s Twin Stars

D’Amato’s teammate Yoshiki Terada (Japan) also took third place in the Kaohsiung stage. This Italian-Japanese duo forms Team Ukyo’s sprint insurance policy—if one gets boxed in, the other can step up.

A Word of Comfort for the “Third-Place” Finishers

If you often find yourself falling “just a little short” of your goals in life, D’Amato’s story might offer some comfort:

• A consistent third place is more valuable than an occasional first place (at least in terms of UCI points)
• Making it onto the podium is a success in itself
• Those who keep showing up at the front will eventually break through

Perhaps in the 2027 Tour de Taiwan, D’Amato will finally move up from third place to something higher. But even if he takes third again, we wouldn’t be too surprised.

After all, that’s his trademark.
