The Complete Guide to Road Bike Chain Cleaning: Keep Your Drivetrain Running as Smooth as New

裝備介紹

Your Chain Needs a Bath More Than You Think

If your chain looks like it was pulled out of a coal mine, congratulations—you’re your bike shop owner’s favorite customer, because you’ll soon be replacing an entire drivetrain.

Why Clean Your Chain?

The grime on your chain isn’t just “dirty.” Once grit mixes into the lubricant, it becomes a natural abrasive, wearing down your chain, cassette, and chainrings a little more with every pedal stroke. Over time, that adds up:

  • One chain: NT$500-2,000
  • One cassette: NT$1,500-5,000
  • One set of chainrings: NT$2,000-10,000
  • Cost of regularly cleaning your chain: nearly zero

Tools You’ll Need

Tool Purpose Price Reference
Chain cleaner Clamps onto the chain for rotating wash NT$200-500
Bicycle-specific degreaser Dissolves grime NT$200-400
Stiff brush Cleaning the cassette and jockey wheels NT$50-100
Clean rag Wiping An old T-shirt works
Chain lubricant Applied after cleaning NT$200-500

Important note: Don’t use household degreasers (like Mr. Muscle)! These products can damage the internal seals of the chain. Use a bicycle-specific degreaser. Common brands available in Taiwan include Finish Line, Muc-Off, Pedro’s, and others.

Cleaning Steps

Step 1: Apply Degreaser

Spray the degreaser onto the chain and wait 10-15 minutes for it to penetrate and dissolve stubborn grime. If your chain hasn’t been cleaned in a long time, you can apply a bit more.

Step 2: Use the Chain Cleaner

Clip the cleaner onto the chain, fill it with degreaser, then slowly turn the cranks backward. The brushes inside the cleaner will automatically scrub every side of the chain. About 20-30 rotations should do it.

Step 3: Clean the Jockey Wheels and Cassette

Use a stiff brush (or an old toothbrush) to clean the grime off the two jockey wheels on the rear derailleur. Also brush the cassette, especially the gunk stuck between the teeth.

Step 4: Second Pass

Spray degreaser again and wipe the chain back and forth with a clean rag. Repeat until the rag no longer picks up black marks.

Step 5: Dry Thoroughly

Make sure the chain is completely dry before lubricating! Residual water or degreaser will dilute the new lubricant and reduce its effectiveness. You can wipe it once more with a dry cloth, or let it air-dry for 10 minutes.

Step 6: Lubricate

Apply chain lube drop by drop onto the rollers of each link. Slowly backpedal the cranks while dripping along the chain.

After applying the lube, wait 2-3 minutes for it to penetrate, then wipe off the excess on the outside with a dry cloth. Remember: only the inside of the rollers needs oil—oil on the outside just attracts dust.

How Often Should You Clean?

Situation Cleaning Frequency
General riding (dry weather) Every 500-1,000 km
After riding in the rain Clean and lube immediately
Dusty routes Every 300-500 km
Taiwan’s plum rain season Wipe down after every ride

Taiwan-Specific Considerations

Taiwan’s high humidity and frequent rainfall accelerate chain corrosion. Pay extra attention in the following situations:

  • Plum rain season (May-June): It rains almost every day, so the chain needs more frequent lubrication
  • After typhoon season: Before your first ride after heavy rain, check the chain for rust
  • Coastal riding: Salt accelerates corrosion—clean it as soon as you get home
  • City riding (Taipei, Kaohsiung): Air pollutants cause grime to build up faster

Determining Chain Lifespan

No matter how diligently you clean, chains eventually need replacing. Measure regularly with a chain checker:

Speed Wear Limit for Replacement
12-speed 0.5%
11-speed 0.5-0.75%
10-speed and below 0.75%

Still not replacing it past that point? Your cassette and chainrings will be crying.

A well-maintained chain can last 3,000-5,000 km. A neglected chain? It might be done after 1,000 km. The difference comes down to whether you’re willing to spend 20 minutes washing your chain.
