Introduction

There is a perpetual contradiction in competitive cycling: climbers and sprinters are almost entirely different body types and ability profiles. Climbers are light, have high W/kg, and excel at sustained efforts; sprinters have large muscle mass and impressive peak power, but typically struggle on long climbs.

However, most amateur riders are not professionals. They need to be able to climb Wuling, and also not fall too far behind in the final kilometer sprint. This requires “Dual Periodization”—strategically developing two seemingly opposing abilities within the same training cycle.


Why Do the Training Demands of These Two Abilities “Conflict”?

Understanding the conflict is the first step to finding a solution:

  3. The recovery demands of high-intensity anaerobic training conflict with high-volume aerobic training

The Core Concept of Dual Periodization Design

The real solution is not training both equally at the same time, but rather letting one ability take the lead in different training blocks while preserving the other through “maintenance training.”

Workout Design for the Climbing Ability Development Block

During the climbing development phase (e.g., Jan–Mar), the recommended weekly training ratio is:

  • Zone 2 Aerobic: 50% of total volume (foundation)
  • Sweet Spot / Threshold: 30% of total volume (core FTP improvement)
  • VO2max Intervals: 15% of total volume (expanding cardiovascular capacity)
  • Anaerobic Sprint (maintenance): Once per week, short sprints 5×15 seconds to maintain neuromuscular sharpness and prevent sprint ability from completely fading

Representative weekly schedule:

  • Tuesday: Threshold 2×20 minutes
  • Thursday: VO2max 5×4 minutes
  • Friday: 5×15 seconds maximal sprints (pure neuromuscular maintenance, recover for 5 minutes afterward)
  • Saturday: Long climbing ride 3–4 hours

Workout Design for the Sprint Ability Development Block

During the sprint development phase (e.g., Jun–Jul), the ratios are adjusted:

  • Zone 2 Aerobic: 45% of total volume (maintain aerobic base)
  • Threshold (maintenance): Once per week, 2×15 minutes to prevent FTP decline
  • Anaerobic Intervals (short): 25% of total volume (5–30 second high-intensity efforts)
  • Neuromuscular Sprints: 15% of total volume (10–15 second maximal sprints, long recovery)

Three Key Principles of Dual Periodization

Principle One: The primary ability needs sufficient training volume
In the climbing block, climbing-related training (threshold + long aerobic rides) must occupy a sufficient proportion and not be diluted by sprint training. Sprinting only needs minimal maintenance, not heavy volume. The reverse applies in the sprint block.

Principle Two: “Maintenance training” doesn’t need to be extensive, but it must be regular
Research shows that aerobic capacity can be “maintained” (not improved) with just one Zone 2 session per week; anaerobic ability can be maintained with one short sprint session per week to preserve neuromuscular sharpness. The key is “regularity,” not “volume.”

Principle Three: The race season allows for natural integration
Races—especially Taiwan’s road races, which typically feature both climbs and sprint sections—provide natural opportunities for integrated practice. During the race season, there’s no need to deliberately separate the two; racing itself is the best training.


Practical Advice

First, clarify your target race type: Do you primarily compete in climbing races (such as Wuling or the崇越盃) or flat speed races? Determine your “primary ability” based on your target race, so your dual periodization design has clear direction.

Use TSS (Training Stress Score) to manage total training load: After adding sprint training, total training stress may exceed your recovery capacity. It’s recommended to use the training load tracking features in Garmin Connect, Training Peaks, or Strava to ensure the additions don’t overload your body.

Climbing and sprinting abilities don’t have to be mutually exclusive—they just require intelligent time allocation. Dual periodization design allows you to become a better climber and a faster sprinter at different times of the year, ultimately making you a well-rounded and threatening competitor across Taiwan’s diverse race terrain.
