Bottom Bracket (BB) Fully Explained: Standards, Maintenance, and Fixing Noises

裝備介紹

One of the Most Confusing Standards in Cycling

The Bottom Bracket (BB) is the key component connecting the crankset to the frame. Located at the lowest point of the frame, it bears all the force from pedaling and is also the spot most prone to water ingress.

BB Standards Overview

Standard Type Inner Diameter Characteristics
BSA (English) Threaded 68mm Most traditional, easiest to service
Italian Threaded 70mm Both sides use right-hand threads
PF30 Press-fit 46mm Common on carbon frames
BB86/BB92 Press-fit 41mm Shimano standard
BB30 Press-fit 42mm Developed by Cannondale
T47 Threaded 47mm New standard combining threading with large bearings

Threaded vs. Press-fit

Comparison Threaded (BSA/T47) Press-fit (PF30/BB86)
Installation Screws in, relatively simple Requires a press tool
Removal Unscrews out Requires a removal tool
Noise issues Less common More prone to creaking
Water resistance Better (threads + grease seal) Worse
DIY-friendly Yes Requires special tools

Signs Your BB Needs Maintenance

Sign Severity
“Click-click” noise while pedaling ⚠️ Needs inspection
Crank has side-to-side play ⚠️ Needs adjustment or replacement
Gritty feeling when spinning the crank 🔴 Bearing wear
Noticeable resistance when spinning the crank 🔴 Bearing damage

Maintenance Steps for Threaded BBs

  1. Remove the crankset: Use the appropriate tool for your crank type
  2. Remove the BB: Unscrew it with a BB tool (note: the right side is usually reverse-threaded! “Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty” doesn’t apply here)
  3. Clean the threads and BB shell
  4. Check the bearings: Spin them to see if they turn smoothly
  5. Apply grease to the threads
  6. Reinstall the BB: Pay attention to torque (typically 35-50 Nm)
  7. Reinstall the crankset

Fixing Noise in Press-fit BBs

Press-fit BBs are notorious for developing noise. Here are the common fixes:

Method Description
Remove, clean, and reinstall Basic first step
Use Loctite 641 Apply medium-strength retaining compound to the outer wall of the BB cup
Switch to a threaded adapter Such as a Wheels Manufacturing adapter
Upgrade to T47 If your frame supports it

BB Maintenance Frequency

Usage Scenario Frequency
General riding Every 5,000 km or once a year
Frequent rain riding Every 3,000 km
After Taiwan’s plum rain season Extra inspection
When noise appears Address immediately

DIY vs. Bike Shop

Scenario Recommendation
Threaded BB (with tools) DIY is possible
Press-fit BB Bike shop recommended (pressing in and removal both require special tools)
Persistent noise you can’t diagnose Bike shop

The BB is one of the hardest-working components on your bike. Take good care of it, and your pedaling will stay smooth forever.
