- Which segment of the race felt the smoothest? Which segment was the most taxing?
- How was the overall rhythm? Did it feel like you were “controlling the race”?
Common Characteristics of PB Races
After analyzing PB races across multiple swimmers, the following common traits typically emerge:
- No over-sprinting in the early stages: PB results are often not achieved by “going all out early,” but rather through precise even pacing or a slightly negative split.
- High turn quality: Turns in PB races are typically 0.1–0.3 seconds faster than the practice average.
- No late-race collapse: The difference between the first and second half stays within a normal range, indicating successful execution of the pacing strategy.
- Relaxed and confident mental state: Swimmers typically describe feeling “surprisingly relaxed” or that it “felt faster than the clock showed” on PB days.
Common Error Analysis in Non-PB Races
Equally important is analyzing “why this race didn’t produce a PB”:
- Going out too fast (2+ seconds): This leads to a late-race collapse, with the final result actually worse than an even-pacing strategy.
- Slow reaction time: Excessive pre-race nervousness or muscle tightness extends reaction time by more than 0.1 seconds.
- Turn errors: Fatigue or tension causes misjudgment in timing the wall, costing 0.2–0.5 seconds.
- Over-breathing: Increased breathing frequency in the latter stages due to oxygen debt disrupts stroke rhythm.
Translating Analysis Results into Training Improvements
- If analysis reveals that “turns have always been a weakness,” schedule dedicated turn training with at least 100 turn repetitions per week.
- If “early-race pacing control” is found to be difficult, add more pace sets to training, comparing each repeat against the target pace with a margin of error no greater than 0.5 seconds.
- If “significant technical deterioration in the latter stages” is identified, add “technical training under fatigue”—starting timing only after physical exertion has been expended, training the body to maintain technical quality while fatigued.
Practical Recommendations
- Build a personal race database: Within 24 hours of each race, compile performance data and subjective feelings, and discuss them with your coach.
- Keep footage of every final: Video is the most objective tool for technical analysis; it is recommended to film from both a side-on shore angle and an underwater angle.
- Set “achievable technical goals”: Each post-race analysis should yield at least one specific improvement goal, to be deliberately executed in the subsequent training cycle.
- Compare multiple PB and non-PB races: Identifying systematic differences between PB and non-PB races offers more insight than analyzing a single race in isolation.
