Bicycle Brake Disc Maintenance: Straightening, Cleaning, and When to Replace

Rotors: Simple but Sensitive Components

Disc brake rotors look like a simple metal disc, but they demand far more cleanliness and flatness than you might expect.

Why Do Rotors Warp?

Lateral force Avoid letting the rotor hit the ground when laying the bike down

Rotor Truing

If your rotor is slightly warped (a “wshh-wshh” sound while riding), you can fix it with a rotor truing fork:

  1. Spin the wheel and locate where the rotor rubs against the caliper
  2. Clamp the truing fork onto the warped section
  3. Bend very gently in the opposite direction
  4. Spin the wheel to check
  5. Repeat until the rotor no longer rubs the caliper

Key point: Use minimal force. Rotors are thin, and over-correcting will bend them the other way.

No truing fork? An adjustable wrench can work as a substitute, but it’s not as precise as the dedicated tool.

Rotor Cleaning

Rotors and brake pads must never come into contact with oil. Once contaminated, braking power drops significantly and is very hard to fully restore.

Cleaning method:

  • Use isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated disc brake cleaner
  • Spray onto a clean paper towel and wipe both sides of the rotor
  • Don’t use general-purpose cleaners (they may contain silicone oil)

If the rotor is contaminated with oil:

  1. Wipe repeatedly with isopropyl alcohol
  2. Lightly sand the rotor surface with 400-grit sandpaper
  3. Replace the brake pads too (oil has soaked into them)
  4. Re-bed the brakes

Rotor Wear

Rotors are consumable parts too! The minimum thickness for most rotors is printed on the rotor surface.

Measure regularly with a caliper. Rotors below minimum thickness can shatter under hard braking—extremely dangerous.

Rotor Bolts

6-bolt 2-4 Nm (use star/Torx bolts)
Center Lock 40 Nm (use a lockring tool)

It’s recommended to apply medium-strength threadlocker (Loctite Blue) to the bolts to prevent loosening from vibration.

If you frequently ride mountain descents, upgrading to a rotor with better heat dissipation is a worthwhile investment. Sustained braking on long descents can push rotor temperatures above 300°C; a good rotor sheds heat faster and reduces brake fade.

Safety Reminders

  • Rotors are extremely hot after descending—don’t touch them!
  • Don’t hold the brake lever for extended periods when stopped on a disc-brake bike (heat expansion of the pads can cause them to stick)
  • Rotor edges are sharp—mind your fingers when removing or installing wheels
