TSS does not reflect differences in training type:
The same TSS can come from completely different training approaches—100 TSS could be a 2-hour LSD ride or a 1-hour high-intensity interval session. The physiological stimulus is entirely different, so training quality cannot be judged by TSS volume alone.

An outdated FTP skews TSS:
If your FTP has improved but has not been retested and updated, the calculated TSS will be inflated, making your training load appear greater than it actually is. It is recommended to retest FTP every 6–8 weeks and update the value.

TSS does not account for off-bike training fatigue:
Stress from non-cycling training such as weight training or running is not included in TSS. Extra attention to overall recovery is needed during cross-training.

  4. Taper significantly two weeks before a race: Reduce weekly TSS to 50–60% of normal, allowing muscle glycogen to fully replenish while preserving training adaptations.
