This is the most critical and most easily overlooked technique in open water. In the pool, you can swim in a straight line by keeping your eyes on the black line at the bottom. In open water, you must periodically lift your head to find the distant sighting buoy or a prominent landmark to confirm you are swimming in the right direction.
- Correct approach: Lift your head once every 8–12 stroke cycles, timing the lift with your breathing motion to minimize the increased drag caused by body elevation

The feeling of not being able to see the bottom and not being able to touch the ground creates significant psychological stress for many swimmers. This panic can trigger hyperventilation and a rapid spike in heart rate, directly impacting performance.

- Participate in open water practice sessions multiple times before race day (triathlon training camps across Taiwan typically offer this opportunity)

Recommended training: During regular practice, alternate between breathing only to the left, only to the right, and a 2-3-2 asymmetrical breathing pattern, so that both sides develop solid breathing capability.

- At least 10 or more open water training sessions per year: Technique needs to build muscle memory in a real environment
- Get in the water the day before the race: If conditions allow, go to the race venue the day before to acclimate to the water temperature, visibility, and sense of distance
- Don’t estimate open water pace based solely on pool results: Most people swim 10–20% slower in open water than in the pool
- Practice swimming in a wetsuit: Wetsuits change buoyancy and arm range of motion, so you need to adapt in advance
- Join a swim training group: Many triathlon clubs in Taiwan offer open water training; swimming alone is both unsafe and inefficient
