The swim leg of a triathlon is almost always held in lakes, reservoirs, or the ocean, and the challenges these venues present go far beyond pure swimming technique.

The Fundamental Differences in Environmental Conditions

The pool provides the ideal artificial environment for swimming: clear, visible bottom, fixed-interval black guide lines, stable water temperature, and a calm, waveless, current-free surface. Every 25 or 50 meters, there is a wall to confirm your position. None of this exists in open water.

This is the most critical and most easily overlooked technique in open water. In the pool, you can swim in a straight line by keeping your eyes on the black line at the bottom. In open water, you must periodically lift your head to find the distant sighting buoy or a prominent landmark to confirm you are swimming in the right direction.

  • Correct approach: Lift your head once every 8–12 stroke cycles, timing the lift with your breathing motion to minimize the increased drag caused by body elevation
  • Common mistakes: Lifting the head too frequently causes the legs to sink and wastes energy; or barely lifting the head at all, resulting in a severely curved swimming path
  • Training method: During pool practice, every few lengths, add a drill of swimming 5 strokes with eyes closed, then lifting your head to check your direction

Adapting Your Swimming Posture

The waves and unstable surface of open water create noticeable differences from the standard pool technique you practice regularly. High-elbow catch becomes even more important in wavy conditions, because the propulsion efficiency of each stroke determines whether you can maintain steady forward progress. Some coaches recommend a slightly higher stroke rate in open water (55–65 strokes per minute) rather than the long, low-frequency strokes common in the pool, to counteract the disruptive effects of currents.

Psychological Management of Deep-Water Panic

The feeling of not being able to see the bottom and not being able to touch the ground creates significant psychological stress for many swimmers. This panic can trigger hyperventilation and a rapid spike in heart rate, directly impacting performance.

Ways to overcome it:

  • Participate in open water practice sessions multiple times before race day (triathlon training camps across Taiwan typically offer this opportunity)
  • During the pre-race warm-up in the race venue, deliberately float in deep water for 30 seconds to acclimate to the sensation
  • Learn to “roll onto your back and float when panic strikes, regulate your breathing, then continue”

Breathing Strategies in Open Water

In the pool, most people are accustomed to breathing every 3 strokes (bilateral breathing), a rhythm that is quite effective in a stable environment. But in open water, when waves are consistently coming from one direction, you need to be able to flexibly switch your breathing side to avoid inhaling spray on every breath.

Recommended training: During regular practice, alternate between breathing only to the left, only to the right, and a 2-3-2 asymmetrical breathing pattern, so that both sides develop solid breathing capability.

Practical Recommendations

  1. At least 10 or more open water training sessions per year: Technique needs to build muscle memory in a real environment
  2. Get in the water the day before the race: If conditions allow, go to the race venue the day before to acclimate to the water temperature, visibility, and sense of distance
  3. Don’t estimate open water pace based solely on pool results: Most people swim 10–20% slower in open water than in the pool
  4. Practice swimming in a wetsuit: Wetsuits change buoyancy and arm range of motion, so you need to adapt in advance
  5. Join a swim training group: Many triathlon clubs in Taiwan offer open water training; swimming alone is both unsafe and inefficient
