Introduction
DNS (Did Not Start) and DNF (Did Not Finish) are two terms in marathon racing that refer to a runner choosing not to participate or withdrawing mid-race. For many runners, these two abbreviations carry heavy psychological pressure and guilt—after months of training, paying the entry fee, and even telling friends you’re running a marathon… choosing to quit at that point feels like failure.
However, one of the highest wisdoms in the road running community is: Quitting at the right time requires more judgment than pushing through, and it better protects your future as a runner.
DNS: Deciding Not to Start Before the Race
DNS occurs when you decide not to participate before race day (or on race day itself). You should seriously consider DNS in the following situations:
Situations Where DNS Is Appropriate
| Situation | Description | Decision Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Acute injury | Fracture, severe sprain, or muscle tear within one week before the race | Clearly DNS to protect long-term health |
| Acute infection | Fever, severe cough, gastroenteritis | Running with a fever may trigger myocarditis—absolutely DNS |
| Overtraining | Deep fatigue or sleep disorders from excessive training | Depending on severity—reduce distance for mild cases, DNS for severe ones |
| Major life events | Family member’s acute illness, emergency business trip | Personal matters come first; there will always be another race |
| Extremely severe weather | Typhoon, extreme heat (feels like over 35°C) | Even if the organizer doesn’t cancel, you may still choose DNS |
Important reminder: If you decide to DNS for a race you’ve already registered for, notify the organizer as early as possible. Some races offer transfer or deferral options, and it also gives runners on the waitlist a chance to take your spot.
DNF: Withdrawing Mid-Race
DNF occurs after the race has started, when a runner chooses to withdraw before reaching the finish line. This decision is much harder because judgment is impaired by fatigue and adrenaline.
Physical Signals That Require Immediate DNF
These are serious warning signs—if any of the following appears, stop immediately and seek medical assistance:
- Chest pain or arrhythmia: Abnormal heartbeat or chest tightness may be a precursor to heart problems.
- Breathing difficulty to the point of being unable to speak: Different from normal exercise panting—this feels like suffocation.
- Confusion or loss of direction: May be a symptom of heat exhaustion or hyponatremia.
- Sudden severe pain in the legs or feet: Fractures or severe muscle tears—continuing could cause permanent damage.
- Vomiting more than twice: Severe gastrointestinal issues affect fluid intake and can quickly lead to dehydration.
- Abnormal body temperature (too high or too low): Manifests as shivering, abnormal skin flushing, or cyanosis.
Situations That Should NOT Be Reasons for DNF
The following conditions are uncomfortable but usually do not require a DNF:
- General fatigue and heavy legs (this is normal)
- Mild side stitches (usually relieved by adjusting breathing rhythm)
- Minor blisters (don’t affect forward progress; treat after the race)
- Low mood or thoughts of giving up (this is the “devil” talking, not your “body”)
How to Make a DNF Decision Mid-Race
A self-assessment framework during the race:
- Ask yourself: “Could continuing cause permanent damage?” If the answer is “yes,” DNF immediately.
- Ask yourself: “Has this discomfort affected my running form?” Severely compensatory running form (such as obvious limping) means the injury is worsening.
- Talk to medical station volunteers: Every aid station usually has medical personnel. When unsure, let professionals assess you—don’t tough it out on your own.
Psychological Recovery After a DNF
The emotions after a DNF are real and normal—allow yourself to feel frustrated on the first day. After that:
- Understand the cause of the DNF (insufficient training? too fast an early pace? improper fueling? injury?) as a lesson for the next race.
- You don’t need to explain yourself to everyone; those who truly care about you will understand.
- Plan your next race—having a goal is more healing than dwelling on regret.
Practical Advice
- Honestly assess your condition before the race: If injured or unwell, being honest with yourself is smarter than telling yourself “just keep running and it’ll be fine.”
- Know where ambulances are on the course: Large marathons have medical support along the route—familiarize yourself with how to call for help.
- Notify companions of your DNF plan: If you decide to withdraw, immediately inform family or friends waiting at the finish line to avoid worrying them.
- Don’t let the entry fee affect health decisions: The registration fee may be non-refundable, but the cost of losing your health is priceless.
- Remember: A DNF is not forever—the next race is: There’s a saying in the marathon community: “Today’s DNF is for the next race’s DNS (Done, Never Stop).”
Conclusion
DNS and DNF do not represent failure—they represent that you are a wise runner. Being able to objectively assess your own condition and protect yourself at the right moment is what allows you to continue enjoying road running for decades to come. You only have one body, and there will always be another race.
