  • Pros: Consistent stimulus, allows comparison of progress across time
  • Cons: On fatigued days or when under-hydrated, power may not be sustainable

Heart-rate-first: Aim to “get heart rate up to 90% HRmax as quickly as possible and hold it there,” letting power follow naturally

  • Pros: Better aligned with the body’s condition on any given day
  • Cons: Heart rate lag makes intensity judgment difficult during the first 60–90 seconds

How to Tell If a Repeat Is Done?

At the end of an ideal Zone 5 interval, you should feel:

  • Heart rate near maximal (functional maximal heart rate), possibly reaching 95–98%
  • Rapid breathing, unable to speak
  • Noticeable burning sensation in the legs
  • But not immediate collapse and exhaustion—if you are completely spent after the first repeat, the intensity is too high

Common Zone 5 Questions

Q: I’m really sore the day after Zone 5. Is that normal?
A: Soreness (DOMS) is normal, but if your legs still feel very heavy after 48 hours, it may be a sign of excessive frequency or overly aggressive Zone 5 intensity. Consider adding an extra recovery day.

Q: Can Zone 5 be done outdoors?
A: Yes, but choosing a steady climb (3–8% gradient) makes it easier to hold Zone 5 power than on flat roads. Recommended locations in Taiwan include the short climbs of Xindian Shitoushan and the Yangmingshan–Wulai route.

Q: What if my heart rate won’t reach 90% HRmax?

  • Progress is gradual: VO2max improvements typically require 6–12 weeks of systematic training before they show up in testing
