Introduction to UTMB
UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) is the world’s most renowned trail race:
- Distance: 170K
- Vertical Gain: D+ 10000m
- Finish Time: Elite 20 hours, average 35-40 hours
- Finish Rate: Approximately 60%
- Entry Requirement: Must earn ITRA stones (accumulated from lower-tier races)
Entry Qualification: UTMB Index Stones
Since 2023, UTMB has adopted the Running Stones system:
| Race Tier | Stones Earned |
|---|---|
| UTMB World Series 50K | 1 stone |
| UTMB World Series 100K | 2 stones |
| UTMB World Series 100M | 4 stones |
Entering the UTMB main event requires a lottery draw weighted by the number of stones. Generally, 6-8 stones are needed for a realistic chance of being selected.
