  • Menstrual cycle: HRV naturally fluctuates around ovulation; female athletes need to establish a cycle-based baseline
  • Altitude and jet lag: A short-term HRV drop after high-altitude exposure or long-haul flights is normal

Practical Advice: Integrating HRV into Your Weekly Plan

At the start of each week, plan out your “intended high-intensity days” (2–3 days) and check the HRV trend the night before. If HRV has been below baseline by 10% for 2 consecutive days, proactively implement the recovery week plan early rather than stubbornly sticking to the original schedule.

Pair this with a training log, recording each HRV measurement and that day’s training perceived exertion (RPE). After a few months, you will discover your own HRV recovery curve—this personalized data is more valuable than any general rule.
