Integrating Multisport Data in Triathlon Training: How to Scientifically Allocate TSS Across Swim, Bike, and Run

The Unique Challenge of Triathlon Training

Marathon runners only need to manage training load for one sport; cyclists only track TSS from riding. But triathletes face three sports with different energy systems, different muscle groups, and different technical demands, all stacked on top of limited training time and recovery capacity.

Overemphasizing any one discipline will cause: fitness loss in the other disciplines, insufficient whole-body recovery capacity, or racing with “the two strongest disciplines unable to carry the weakest one.” Data-driven TSS integration is the core tool for solving this problem.

TSS Calculation Basis for the Three Disciplines

The TSS calculation basis differs across disciplines. Here are the reference tools for each:

Below are the weekly TSS targets and allocation recommendations for each distance during a “full training week (not a recovery week)”:

Olympic Distance (OD: 1.5K Swim + 40K Bike + 10K Run)

  • Weekly Total TSS Target: 350–500
  • Swim: 15–20% (50–90 TSS)
  • Bike: 45–55% (160–250 TSS)
  • Run: 25–35% (100–160 TSS)

Half Ironman (70.3)

  • Weekly Total TSS Target: 500–700
  • Swim: 15–20% (75–120 TSS)
  • Bike: 45–55% (225–350 TSS)
  • Run: 25–35% (140–220 TSS)

Full Ironman (Ironman 140.6)

  • Weekly Total TSS Target: 700–1000+
  • Swim: 15–20% (100–180 TSS)
  • Bike: 45–55% (320–500 TSS)
  • Run: 25–35% (200–330 TSS)

Why Cycling TSS Holds the Highest Share

Cycling TSS typically holds the highest share (45–55%), for several scientific reasons:

  1. Race Time Proportion: In a half Ironman, cycling accounts for about 55–60% of total race time
  2. Lower Injury Risk: High-intensity cycling training does not accumulate musculoskeletal damage as easily as running
  3. Aerobic Base Benefits: Cycling efficiently builds the aerobic engine, with spillover benefits to running

Weekly Plan Example for Three-Discipline Allocation (70.3 Preparation)

Using the example of an athlete with a weekly TSS target of 600 and 10–12 total training hours:

  • Monday: Rest or easy swim (sTSS 40)
  • Tuesday: Morning Tempo run 60 min (rTSS 75) + Afternoon easy ride 60 min (cTSS 50)
  • Wednesday: Pool session 3000m with threshold sets (sTSS 80)
  • Thursday: Ride with intervals 90 min (cTSS 90)
  • Friday: Rest or active recovery (sTSS 20)
  • Saturday: Long ride 3–4 hours aerobic (cTSS 180) + Transition run 20 min (rTSS 30)
  • Sunday: Long run 90 min aerobic (rTSS 90)

Weekly Total TSS: Approximately 655, Swim 140 (21%), Bike 320 (49%), Run 195 (30%)

Notes on Cross-Discipline Fatigue Transfer

Fatigue management in triathlon is more complex than in a single sport, because fatigue accumulates across disciplines:

  • Running ability noticeably declines the day after high-intensity cycling
  • Upper-body fatigue after a long swim can affect posture stability on the bike
  • Accumulated leg fatigue after long runs can affect cycling ability the following week

Recommendation: Include 1–2 “Brick Training” sessions per week, running immediately after riding (race simulation), to help the body adapt to the fatigue of multisport transitions.

Practical Advice: Multisport Integration with TrainingPeaks

  • Set the thresholds for all three disciplines separately in TrainingPeaks (FTP, lactate threshold pace, CSS)
  • Review the TSS distribution across disciplines in the “Weekly Summary”
  • At the start of each training season (12–16 weeks out), confirm the target ratios for all three disciplines; 6–8 weeks before race day, begin emphasizing your weakest discipline
