However, periodization is not exclusive to Olympic athletes—amateur swimmers in Taiwan can benefit from it just as much. Whether your goal is crossing Sun Moon Lake, a Penghu triathlon, or chasing a personal best, a well-planned periodized training program can help you “peak at the right time.”


The Three Main Phases of Swimming Periodization

Detailed Planning for the Three Phases

Base Phase (8–12 weeks)

The core goal of the base phase is to accumulate training volume and build an aerobic foundation.

The recovery phase is the most easily overlooked yet most important stage for many swimmers.

  • Focus on technique refinement and physical recovery
  • Avoid complete cessation (detraining becomes significant after 2 weeks)

The Sun Moon Lake mass crossing is typically held in September. Here is an annual plan designed around that goal:

  • Don’t skip recovery weeks: Every 3–4 weeks, schedule a deload week (training volume reduced by 30%)—this is when “supercompensation” occurs
  • Taiwan’s summer heat matters: In July–August, pool water temperatures in Taiwan are high, placing greater strain on the body’s cooling system; intensity during the competition phase should be adjusted conservatively
  • Multi-cycle design: If you have multiple target races in a year, design several smaller cycles (12–16 weeks each), each with its own preparation–competition–recovery structure
