The body’s aerobic system is the foundation of all athletic performance. Mitochondrial density, capillary count, and fat-metabolism enzyme activity—these physiological traits that determine aerobic efficiency—all require substantial low-intensity stimulation to develop. Skipping the base period and jumping straight into high-intensity training is like building a skyscraper on sand: it looks fine in the short term, but over time the unstable foundation is bound to collapse.

  3. Maintain strength training in winter: Do 1–2 core and leg strength sessions per week to prevent muscle loss and prepare for the high-intensity spring period
  4. Track a steady CTL increase: A winter CTL target of 5–10 points every 4 weeks is a direct indicator of base period training effectiveness
