Chainring Size: The Art of Balancing Speed and Climbing
Chainring size is one of the most direct factors affecting the ride feel of a road bike’s drivetrain. Choosing the right crankset setup is like choosing the right weapon — you need to decide based on your battlefield (route terrain) and your combat strength (fitness level).

Pros:
- The 34T small ring makes climbing easy, and paired with a 30T or 34T cassette it handles most of Taiwan’s mountain roads
- The 50T big ring is plenty for flat-road cruising
- Widest component selection and most affordable pricing
- Only a 16T jump between rings, giving smooth front shifting
Cons:
- Strong riders may find the 50T “not enough” at high speed on flats
- Top speed may be limited during group ride sprints
Best for: Yangmingshan, Sun Moon Lake loop, the eastern section of the Central Cross-Island Highway, and most of Taiwan’s rolling hill routes.
52/36T Semi-Compact: The Balanced Choice for Advanced Riders
Pros:
- The 52T big ring gives a higher top-speed ceiling on flats and descents
- The 36T small ring still climbs reasonably well
- Suits riders who are “fairly strong but still climb sometimes”
Cons:
- The 16T front jump is the same as 50/34T, but the overall gearing runs heavier
- The 36T small ring can feel taxing on very steep grades (>15%)
Best for: The Xibin Coastal Highway, Provincial Highway 3, the North Coast, and occasional hilly terrain challenges.
46/33T Sub-Compact: The Climbing Specialist
Pros:
- The 33T small ring is a climbing weapon — paired with a 34T cog it’s nearly a 1:1 ratio
- SRAM AXS’s 10T small cog compensates for flat-road gearing
- Only a 13T front jump, giving extremely smooth shifting
Cons:
- Limited component options outside AXS systems
- Limited top speed on flats (requires a 10T or 11T small cog to compensate)
- Riders used to bigger rings may need to adjust their pedaling style
Best for: Wuling, Alishan, Tataka, and other high-altitude long climbs.
The SRAM AXS Gear Ratio Revolution
SRAM AXS introduced a new way of thinking about gear ratios, redefining the relationship between chainrings and cassettes with cogs starting at 10T:
- 48/35T + 10-33T: Covers a range equivalent to a traditional 52/36T + 11-33T
- 46/33T + 10-36T: An extremely wide ratio range, covering both climbing and flats
This “smaller chainring + smaller cog” combination shortens chain length and improves overall drivetrain efficiency.
Chainring Recommendations by Taiwan Terrain
Based on your primary riding terrain, here are some recommendations:
Mostly Flat (Xibin Coastal Road, riverside bike paths)
- Recommended: 52/36T with an 11-28T or 11-30T cassette
- Why: The 52T provides enough high-speed gearing, and the 36T handles the occasional small hill
Mixed Hilly Terrain (North Coast + Fengguizui, County Road 106)
- Recommended: 50/34T with an 11-30T or 11-32T cassette
- Why: The most balanced setup, handling both flats and mountain roads
Mostly Mountain Roads (frequent KOM route challenges)
- Recommended: 50/34T with an 11-34T cassette, or 46/33T with a 10-33T cassette
- Why: Ensures you have enough easy gearing available on long climbs
Race-Oriented (road races, criteriums)
- Recommended: 52/36T with an 11-28T or 11-30T cassette
- Why: Racing demands high-speed sprint capability, and a 30T is enough for hilly courses
Front Derailleur Considerations
When choosing a chainring, also consider front derailleur performance:
- The smaller the tooth gap, the smoother the shift: 50/34 (16T gap) has a bigger jump than 53/39 (14T gap), but modern front derailleurs handle it fine
- Chainline angle: Avoid cross-chaining — big ring with big cog, or small ring with small cog
- Electronic shifting advantage: Di2 and eTap front shifting is far more precise than mechanical, reducing the impact of a larger tooth gap
The Relationship Between Power and Gear Ratio
If you have a power meter, you can choose your chainring more precisely:
- FTP < 200W: 50/34T or 46/33T, to ensure enough easy gearing for climbs
- FTP 200-280W: 50/34T is the best choice, upgrading to 52/36T if needed
- FTP > 280W: 52/36T or even 53/39T — you have the power to push a bigger gear
Practical Notes on Swapping Chainrings
When swapping chainrings, keep the following in mind:
- BCD compatibility: Confirm the new chainring is compatible with your crank’s BCD (bolt circle diameter)
- Front derailleur adjustment: Different tooth counts require resetting the front derailleur’s limit screws
- Chain length: A change in tooth count may require adjusting chain length
- Rear derailleur capacity: Confirm the rear derailleur’s capacity can handle the total tooth difference

For most Taiwanese riders, the 50/34T compact remains the safest and most practical choice. Taiwan’s terrain is highly varied, and a single ride can include both flats and mountains, so the compact setup offers the most flexibility. If your fitness improves to the point where the 50T feels insufficient, it’s not too late to consider upgrading to 52/36T. For dedicated climbers, 46/33T paired with a SRAM AXS system is currently the strongest climbing setup available.
