The length and angle of a stem determine the distance from your hands to the handlebar, your upper body’s tilt angle, and the responsiveness of your handling. More importantly, the stem is the easiest and lowest-cost adjustment method in bike fitting.

The Impact of Stem Angle

The stem angle determines the height of the handlebar:

  • Most high-end road bikes come standard with -6° or -7°

Zero Angle (0°)

  • Handlebar height is determined by the head tube length
  • A neutral choice

Positive Angle (e.g., +6°, +17°, +35°)

  • Higher handlebar position
  • More comfortable, upright position
  • Suitable for riders with back or neck discomfort
  • Commonly found on leisure bikes or endurance models

The Relationship Between Stem and Frame Size

An important concept: The stem should not be used to “correct” a wrong frame size.

  • If you need a stem longer than 120mm to ride comfortably, the frame may be too small
  • If you need a stem shorter than 80mm, the frame may be too large
  • The ideal stem length range is 90-110mm, where handling is most balanced

Exception: Some modern frames with integrated handlebar designs may normally use shorter stems because the handlebar’s Reach differs from traditional designs.

The Concept of Stack and Reach

When choosing a stem, you need to understand two frame geometry measurements:

  • Stack: The vertical distance from the BB center to the top of the head tube (affects handlebar height)
  • Reach: The horizontal distance from the BB center to the top of the head tube (affects handlebar distance)

The Role of Spacers

Head tube spacers are the stem’s best partner:

  • For every 10mm of spacer added, the handlebar rises approximately 8-9mm (depending on the head tube angle)
  • It is generally recommended that the total spacer height not exceed 40mm
  • As flexibility and core strength improve, spacers can be gradually reduced

A common progression for Taiwanese riders:

  1. Beginner phase: 30-40mm of spacers above the stem, 0° or positive angle
  2. Intermediate phase: Spacers reduced to 15-20mm, -6° or -7° angle
  3. Competition phase: Minimal or no spacers (slammed), -6° to -17° angle

For most riders, a forged aluminum stem is sufficient. The weight advantage of a carbon fiber stem is usually only 20-30g, but the price difference can be 3-5 times.

How to Determine if Your Stem Needs Adjustment

The following symptoms may indicate that your stem needs adjustment:

Signs the stem is too long:

  • Arms are completely straight with no bent elbow for shock absorption
  • Shoulders and neck tire easily
  • Excessive forward lean restricting breathing
  • Too much pressure on the palms and wrists

Signs the stem is too short:

  • Knees nearly touch the elbows
  • The front end feels unstable at high speeds
  • Steering is overly sensitive, prone to oversteering
  • Upper body is too upright, creating noticeable wind resistance

Signs the handlebar is too low:

  • The neck must tilt back significantly to see ahead
  • Neck soreness after riding more than 30 minutes
  • Numbness in the hands (ulnar nerve compression)
  • Lower back pain

Signs the handlebar is too high:

  • Feels like sitting upright rather than leaning into the ride
  • Noticeable wind resistance when riding into a headwind
  • Center of gravity shifts rearward when climbing

Practical Selection Recommendations

Specific recommendations based on different needs:

Beginner Riders

  • Stem length: 80-90mm
  • Angle: -6° with 20-30mm of spacers
  • Goal: Establish a comfortable riding foundation

Advancing Riders

  • Stem length: 90-100mm
  • Angle: -6° with 10-20mm of spacers
  • Goal: Gradually optimize aerodynamics and efficiency

Competitive Riders Pursuing Results

  • Stem length: 100-120mm
  • Angle: -6° to -17°, minimal spacers
  • Goal: Optimal aerodynamic position

Precautions When Replacing the Stem

  1. Torque values: Do not overtighten carbon fiber handlebars and forks; always use a torque wrench
  2. Fork steerer length: After changing the stem position, confirm the steerer tube is long enough and the star nut is positioned correctly
  3. Anti-slip compound: Use carbon assembly paste on carbon fiber contact surfaces
  4. Gradual adjustment: Ride at least 100 kilometers after each adjustment before deciding whether to continue adjusting
