Advanced Technique: Pace Control
One of the keys to improving speed for intermediate swimmers is learning “negative split pacing”—swimming the second half faster than the first half. This requires deliberate restraint in the first half so you have energy to accelerate in the second half.
How to train negative splits:
- In 400m training sets, record split times for the first 200m and the second 200m
- Aim for the second 200m to be 2–5 seconds faster than the first 200m
- If the second half is slower than the first, it means you started too fast or your aerobic base is insufficient
- If the second half is more than 10 seconds faster than the first, it means you started too conservatively

Mistake 1: Going all-out in every session
- Problem: The body remains in a constant state of high fatigue with insufficient recovery
- Fix: Strictly distinguish between “easy days” and “hard days”—on easy days, your pace should feel “too slow”
