Taiwan’s mountain descents have several characteristics that differ from European race routes:
- High density of sharp corners: Taiwan’s mountain roads often feature consecutive 180-degree hairpin turns, requiring quick judgment of each corner’s depth
- Inconsistent road surface quality: Some sections have cracks, potholes, or freshly patched asphalt that need to be identified in advance
- Leaves and gravel: The inside of mountain corners often accumulates leaves or loose stones—these are the most slip-prone areas
- Motorcycles and cars sharing the road: Some races in Taiwan’s mountains allow half-open traffic, requiring constant vigilance for oncoming vehicles
Mental Management and Overcoming Fear
The biggest obstacle to descending technique is not skill but psychological fear. Every rider has a “fear threshold” on descents—beyond a certain speed, anxiety sets in and movements become stiff.
Methods for overcoming psychological fear:
- Increase speed gradually: Don’t chase maximum speed from the start; first familiarize yourself with the route at 70–80% of your comfortable pace
- Practice braking first: Confirm that your brakes can decelerate effectively within the expected distance to build a sense of security
- Ride with faster riders: Follow better descenders and learn their cornering lines and braking points
- Use positive self-talk: Replace “What if I crash?” with “I know how to handle this corner”
Equipment’s Impact on Descending Speed
- Tire pressure: On descents, you can run approximately 5 psi lower than usual to increase contact patch and grip
- Disc brakes vs. rim brakes: Disc brakes offer significantly better braking stability on long descents than rim brakes, with less heat fade
- Helmets: At high descending speeds, full-face helmets offer far superior protection compared to road helmets (though they are heavier)

- Pre-ride the descent sections: Familiarize yourself with the entry point, apex, and exit point of every corner
- Practice emergency braking: On safe straight sections, practice going from high speed to a full stop to build awareness of braking distance
- Film your descents: Use a dash cam or GoPro to record your downhill runs, then analyze your cornering lines and braking points afterward
- Don’t chase the single fastest run—aim for “overall speed through consecutive corners”: Save 0.5 seconds per corner, and across 20 consecutive corners you’ve saved 10 seconds
- Watch for wind chill at high altitudes: High-speed descents cause wind chill that drops perceived temperature sharply—be sure to carry a windproof jacket
