Winter Cycling Gear Guide: Dressing Rules That Balance Warmth and Functionality

裝備介紹

The Challenges of Winter Cycling in Taiwan

In Taiwan’s winter (December–February), temperatures in the north can drop to 10–15°C, and with the northeast monsoon and humidity, it feels even colder. The wind chill effect while riding can make it feel another 5–10°C colder, but the heat generated by exercise makes dressing complicated.

The Golden Rule of Dressing: The Layering System

Layer Function Material
Base layer Wicks sweat, keeps you dry Synthetic fiber / Merino wool
Mid layer Insulation Roubaix (brushed) jersey
Outer layer Windproof, waterproof Softshell / windproof vest

Dressing Recommendations by Temperature Range

15–20°C (Cool)

  • Thin long-sleeve jersey, or short-sleeve jersey + arm warmers
  • Standard bib shorts
  • Thin gloves (optional)
  • A light vest in the pocket

10–15°C (Cold)

  • Roubaix (brushed) long-sleeve jersey
  • Roubaix (brushed) thermal bib tights
  • Windproof vest
  • Full-finger gloves
  • Skull cap / ear warmers

5–10°C (Very Cold)

  • Wicking base layer + Roubaix (brushed) jersey
  • Windproof jacket
  • Winter thick bib tights
  • Winter gloves
  • Shoe covers
  • Skull cap

< 5°C (Extreme Cold, e.g., descending Wuling)

  • Full winter kit + insulated windbreaker
  • Ski-glove-level insulation
  • Thick shoe covers
  • Neck warmer / face mask

Detailed Gear Guide by Body Part

Hands

Fingers are the first to lose heat:

  • 10–15°C: Thin full-finger gloves
  • 5–10°C: Winter windproof gloves
  • < 5°C: Lobster gloves (two-finger merged design)

Feet

  • Shoe covers: The most effective way to keep feet warm
  • Material: Neoprene offers the best waterproofing and insulation
  • Alternative: Thick socks + toe warmers
  • Skull cap under the helmet: Worn beneath the helmet
  • Ear warmers: Protect the ears on their own
  • Neck warmer: Protects the neck and can be pulled up to cover the lower face

Torso

  • The windproof vest is the most important piece: It blocks wind from the core while allowing the back to breathe
  • A good windproof vest can extend your comfortable dressing temperature range by 5°C

Material Selection

Base Layer (Most Important)

Material Wicking Warmth Odor Resistance Price
Polyester ★★★★ ★★ Low
Merino wool ★★★ ★★★★ ★★★★★ High
Blend ★★★★ ★★★ ★★★ Medium

Key Principle: Never wear cotton as a base layer. Cotton stays wet after absorbing sweat and will make you colder and colder.

Common Winter Cycling Issues

Feeling Cold at the Start

  • Normal! Feeling slightly cool at the start is correct
  • If you feel warm at the start, you’ll overheat after 10 minutes of riding
  • Rule of thumb: If you feel slightly cold while standing outside waiting, your outfit is right

Too Hot Climbing, Too Cold Descending

  • This is the biggest annoyance of winter cycling
  • Solution: Unzip to vent heat before the climb, put on a windbreaker at the summit
  • A windproof vest can be put on or taken off quickly

Foggy Glasses

  • Use anti-fog lenses
  • Adjust the face mask so your breath doesn’t blow directly onto the lenses
  • Choose cycling glasses with good ventilation
Brand Features Price Range
Castelli The most professional winter jerseys High
Gore Wear Top-tier windproof and waterproof technology High
Pearl Izumi Japanese brand, fit suited to Asians Mid-high
dhb High value-for-money British brand Mid-low

Summary

The core concept of winter cycling attire: Wicking > Warmth > Windproofing. Keeping your body dry matters more than piling on heavy layers. Investing in a good base layer and a windproof vest will cover most of Taiwan’s winter cycling needs.
