Complete Road Bike Hub Maintenance Guide: Disassembly, Cleaning, Lubrication, Reassembly
The hub is the heart of a wheelset. A quality hub with proper maintenance can last more than ten years. Neglect it, however, and you’ll run into noise, rough rotation, or even seized bearings. This article covers complete maintenance procedures for the two main hub types.
The Two Main Types of Hubs

Structure:
- Ball bearings roll between a cup (fixed to the hub shell) and a cone (threaded onto the axle)

Cup and Cone Hub Maintenance (Using Shimano as an Example)
Tools Needed
- 13mm / 15mm open-end wrench (depending on hub spec)
- 17mm cone wrench
- Degreaser
- Clean rags
- Waterproof grease (e.g. Shimano Premium Grease)
- Magnetic pickup tool (for retrieving ball bearings)
- A small container (for holding the balls)
Disassembly Steps
Step 1: Remove the quick release or thru-axle
- Remove the wheel from the frame
- Remove the quick-release skewer or thru-axle

Lubrication and Reassembly
Step 1: Apply grease
- Apply a generous amount of grease to the cup surface (filling about 70% of the cup)

Checking Bearing Condition
You can get a preliminary read on bearing condition without disassembly:
- Remove the tire and spin the axle by hand
- Normal: smooth and silent, even feel
- Needs attention: slight grittiness — service it soon
- Needs replacement: obvious grinding noise, binding, or play when rocked
Bearing Replacement (Using DT Swiss as an Example)
Tools needed:
- Bearing press-out tool
- Bearing press-in tool
- Replacement bearings (confirm the spec, e.g. 6802-2RS)
- Grease
Steps:
- Remove the end caps (DT Swiss caps usually unscrew by hand)
- Use the bearing press-out tool to push out the old bearing
- Clean the inside of the hub shell
- Apply a thin layer of grease to the outer race of the new bearing
- Use the bearing press-in tool to press the new bearing in with even force
- Never: hammer a bearing in directly! Uneven force will damage the bearing

- Two toothed ratchet rings (Star Ratchets), pressed together and engaged by a spring
- The teeth engage under pedaling load to transmit power
- The teeth separate while coasting, producing the system’s distinctive buzzing sound
Maintenance Steps
- Remove the freehub body: pull the freehub body out — no tools required
- Remove the ratchet rings: the two ratchet rings and spring will come out together
- Clean:
- Wash the ratchet ring teeth with degreaser
- Clean the inside of the hub shell
- Clean the spring
- Inspect:
- Check the teeth for wear marks
- Check that the spring still has adequate tension
- Check that the teeth engage evenly
- Lubricate:
- Apply DT Swiss Special Grease to the ratchet ring teeth
- Never use regular grease — the wrong viscosity affects engagement
- Don’t over-apply; a thin layer is enough
- Reassemble:
- Put the ratchet rings and spring back in order
- Insert the freehub body and confirm it’s fully seated
