The criterium (Crit) is one of the most exciting forms of road cycling racing. On a closed, short-loop circuit, riders repeatedly experience acceleration, braking, cornering, and sprinting—every lap is a small-scale battle for survival. For Taiwanese cyclists, criteriums are the most accessible form of road racing, but performing well requires a fitness and tactical preparation that is completely different from long-distance riding.
Physiological Demands of Criterium Racing
Power Profile Characteristics
A typical criterium power file looks like an electrocardiogram—constant peaks and valleys. According to research analysis:
- Average Power: Approximately 75-85% of FTP
- Normalized Power (NP): Approximately 95-105% of FTP (significantly higher than average power)
- Variability Index (VI = NP/AP): Typically > 1.15 (long-distance road races are around 1.05-1.10)
- High-Intensity Sprint Count: 2-4 bursts above 150% FTP per lap
- Recovery Time Per Lap: Usually only 20-40 seconds of low-intensity riding
Key Fitness Metrics
1. Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA)
RSA is the ability to repeatedly execute high-power sprints without full recovery. This is the most critical fitness requirement in criterium racing.
Research shows that RSA depends on:
- Anaerobic capacity (FRC): Determines the “ammunition” available for each sprint
- Recovery rate: Determines how much “ammunition” can be reloaded between sprints
- VO2max: Determines the aerobic system’s replenishment capacity during recovery
- Muscle buffering capacity: Handling the accumulation of lactate and hydrogen ions
2. Corner-Exit Acceleration
The critical turning points in a criterium are often at corner exits. Every corner requires:
- Braking into the corner (possibly dropping from 45 km/h to 25 km/h)
- Maintaining speed through the corner
- Accelerating out of the corner to regain cruising speed (5-10 seconds of 300-500W+ output)
If your corner-exit acceleration is slower than the pack’s, you’ll lose 1-2 positions at every corner, and after a few laps, you’ll be dropped from the group.
RSA Training Plan
Base Period RSA Training (8-12 weeks before race)
Workout 1: Aerobic Base + Neuromuscular Activation
Warm-up: 20 minutes progressive
Main set:
- 4 x 8 minutes Zone 3 (Tempo)
- Accelerate to Zone 5 for the final 15 seconds of each interval
- 3 minutes recovery between intervals
Cool-down: 15 minutes
Total time: Approximately 75 minutes
Workout 2: Threshold Endurance Base
Warm-up: 20 minutes
Main set:
- 2 x 15 minutes @ 90-95% FTP
- 5 minutes recovery between intervals
Cool-down: 15 minutes
Total time: Approximately 70 minutes
Specialized Period RSA Training (4-8 weeks before race)
Workout 3: Classic RSA Intervals
Warm-up: 20 minutes
Main set:
3 sets, each containing:
- 10 x (15 seconds all-out sprint + 15 seconds easy spinning recovery)
- 5 minutes recovery between sets (Zone 2 easy spinning)
Cool-down: 15 minutes
Total time: Approximately 65 minutes
Notes:
- Target > 150% FTP for each sprint
- Keep pedaling during recovery, maintain low power output
- If power drops more than 20% in the latter half of a set, reduce the number of sprints
Workout 4: Simulated Criterium Intervals
Warm-up: 20 minutes
Main set:
Simulate a 2-minute-per-lap criterium rhythm:
- 20 x (30 seconds Zone 2 + 10 seconds all-out + 40 seconds Zone 3 + 10 seconds all-out + 30 seconds Zone 2)
- Rest 3 minutes after every 5 laps
Cool-down: 15 minutes
Total time: Approximately 70 minutes
This workout simulates the demands of two corner accelerations per lap
Workout 5: High-Intensity Sustained + Bursts
Warm-up: 20 minutes
Main set:
4 x 5 minutes @ 105% FTP
Within each interval:
- At the end of minute 1: 5-second all-out sprint
- At the end of minute 3: 5-second all-out sprint
- Immediately return to 105% FTP and continue
5 minutes recovery between intervals
Cool-down: 15 minutes
Total time: Approximately 70 minutes
This workout trains the ability to sprint while in a high-lactate state
Pre-Race Period (1-3 weeks before race)
Workout 6: Race Simulation
Warm-up: 15 minutes
Main set:
30 minutes of simulated racing:
- On a familiar criterium course (e.g., a loop on a riverside bike path)
- Sprint all-out for 10 seconds at a fixed point on every lap
- Maintain race pace for the rest of the course
Cool-down: 15 minutes
If no course is available, substitute with a criterium mode on Zwift using a trainer
Tactical Reading Ability
Position Management
Positioning in a criterium is more important than in any other form of racing:
Ideal Position: Front 1/3 of the Pack
- Avoids the accordion effect at the rear (riders behind have to expend extra energy to close gaps at every corner)
- Allows you to see attacks developing up front
- Provides room to react to crashes ahead
Position Maintenance Techniques:
- Move up before entering corners, hold the inside line through the turn
- Use drafting on the straights to move forward efficiently
- Don’t brake at the last moment before a corner (you’ll get squeezed out)
Identifying Attack Timing
Effective attacks typically happen:
- At consecutive corner exits: When the pack is stretched into a long line
- At the start of a headwind section: When others instinctively ease off
- During the feed zone in the latter half of the race (if applicable): When attention is distracted
- In the final 3-5 laps: Setting up for the finish sprint
Characteristics of ineffective attacks:
- Launched on the most tightly packed straight section (immediately chased down)
- Too many laps remaining (a solo break of 10+ laps is almost never successful)
- The attacker is clearly fatigued (power output cannot be sustained)
Strategies for Responding to Attacks
Strategy A: Follow
- React immediately, close the gap within 2-3 seconds
- Don’t take the lead; sit on the attacker’s wheel
- Once things stabilize, assess whether to take turns
Strategy B: Ignore
- Judge that the attack won’t succeed (opponent is fatigued / too far from the finish)
- Stay in the pack and recover
- Risk: If the judgment is wrong, you may not be able to chase back
Strategy C: Bridge
- Wait 10-15 seconds to observe the pack’s reaction
- If no one chases, accelerate and bridge up to the attacker
- Use the freshness of “starting late” as an advantage
Characteristics of Taiwanese Criterium Venues
1. Dajia Riverside Park
- Course Length: Approximately 2-3 km per lap
- Features: Flat, wider corners
- Wind Conditions: Riding along the river, with a noticeable headwind section
- Tactical Focus: Wind management, positioning for the finish sprint
2. Taichung Central Taiwan Science Park Criterium
- Course Length: Approximately 3-4 km
- Features: Gentle climbs, wide industrial park roads
- Tactical Focus: Attacking on the gentle climbs, small-group breakaways
3. Kaohsiung Love River Criterium
- Course Length: Approximately 2 km
- Features: Short laps, many corners, changing road surfaces
- Tactical Focus: Technical cornering, fighting for position
Safety Precautions
The dense pack and high-speed corners of criterium racing make the risk of crashes far higher than in regular road races:
- Equipment: Full-finger gloves and an approved helmet (MIPS recommended) are the minimum requirements
- Tires: Run tire pressure slightly lower than normal (5-10 psi less) to increase cornering grip
- Brakes: Ensure brake pads are in good condition; disc brakes have an advantage on corner-heavy courses
- Vision: Always look 2-3 riders ahead, don’t just stare at the wheel in front of you
- Communication: Learn and use hand signals and verbal warnings (“on your right,” “slowing,” “pothole”)
Criterium racing is a perfect blend of skill, fitness, and tactics. You don’t need the highest FTP, but you do need the smartest riding style and the strongest explosive power. Start incorporating RSA training today, and you’ll feel a noticeable difference at your next criterium.
