The Art of Pacing in Climbing Races: The Perfect Strategy for Wuling Cup and Eastbound Wuling
Wuling, at 3,275 meters above sea level, is the highest point reachable by road in Taiwan and a holy grail for road cycling. Whether taking the west route (starting from Puli, 55 km with approximately 2,800 meters of climbing) or the east route (starting from Hualien, approximately 80 km through Taroko to Dayuling), conquering Wuling demands a precise pacing strategy. This article focuses on the most classic westbound Wuling route (Puli → Wushe → Kunyang → Wuling) as the primary analysis target, while also covering the unique challenges of the eastbound route.
Westbound Wuling Route Analysis

Segment 1: Puli → Renzhiguan (0-14km)

Characteristics: Mostly gentle climbs with some flat sections; this is the warm-up segment
This is the easiest section of the entire route, but also the most common place to make mistakes. Many riders go too fast here, underestimating the difficulty ahead.
Pacing Advice: Ride at 75-80% of FTP, maintaining an easy breathing rhythm. The goal at this stage is to feel “too easy.”
Segment 2: Renzhiguan → Wushe (14-24km)
Distance: 10 km
Climbing: approx. 400 meters
Average Gradient: 4.0%
Elevation Range: 800m → 1,200m
Characteristics: Gradient begins to increase, including several 6-8% steep sections
After entering Renzhiguan, the gradient increases noticeably—this is the first test. Wushe is an important resupply point, and most races set up a feed station here.
Pacing Advice: 78-83% of FTP. On the 6-8% steep sections, do not deliberately accelerate; maintain the same power output and accept the drop in speed.
Segment 3: Wushe → Cingjing → Cuifeng (24-38km)
Distance: 14 km
Climbing: approx. 900 meters
Average Gradient: 6.4%
Elevation Range: 1,200m → 2,100m
Characteristics: The main climbing segment, including continuous steep gradients from Cingjing Farm to Cuifeng
This is the core segment of the Wuling challenge. Sustained 6-8% gradients combined with gradually increasing altitude cause the perceived difficulty to rise sharply. Several hairpin turns before Cuifeng reach gradients of 12-15%.
Pacing Advice: 80-85% of FTP. From this segment onward, altitude power correction needs attention (see explanation below). On steep sections, shift to a lighter gear and maintain a cadence of 60-70 rpm.
Segment 4: Cuifeng → Yuanfeng → Kunyang (38-50km)
Distance: 12 km
Climbing: approx. 800 meters
Average Gradient: 6.7%
Elevation Range: 2,100m → 2,900m
Characteristics: High-altitude segment with sustained gradients, including the steepest sections
Above 2,000 meters, partial oxygen pressure drops significantly; at the same power output, heart rate will be 15-25 bpm higher than at sea level. Many riders hit the wall here.
Pacing Advice: 75-80% of FTP (already accounting for altitude effects). Focus on breathing rhythm and apply even force with every pedal stroke.
Segment 5: Kunyang → Wuling (50-55km)
Distance: 5 km
Climbing: approx. 375 meters
Average Gradient: 7.5%
Elevation Range: 2,900m → 3,275m
Characteristics: Final sprint segment, including a steep climb after the last sharp turn
The final 5 kilometers are the ultimate test of both mind and body. At this point, the altitude exceeds 3,000 meters, and the air’s oxygen content is only about 70% of that at sea level.
Pacing Advice: If pacing has been correct up to this point, you can increase to 85-90% of FTP or even higher. Sprint all-out for the final 1 kilometer.
Altitude Power Correction: The Critical Hidden Factor
The impact of altitude on riding performance is often underestimated. As altitude increases, lower air density produces two effects:

High-Altitude Nutrition Notes
- Reduced Digestion: Above 2,500 meters, gastrointestinal motility slows down; avoid solid foods
- Accelerated Dehydration: The air at high altitude is dry, increasing water loss through respiration; drink 20-30% more water than at sea level
- Nausea: High altitude combined with high-intensity exercise can easily cause nausea; if prone to this, switch to electrolyte water instead of sweet sports drinks
Special Considerations for the East Route to Wuling
The east route starts from Xincheng in Hualien, passing through Taroko and Tianxiang to Dayuling. The route is longer (about 80 km to Dayuling, then connecting to Kunyang and Wuling), but the gradient distribution differs:
- Taroko to Tianxiang (0-19km): Gentle climb along the canyon, average gradient of only 2%
- Tianxiang to Dayuling (19-58km): Gradually climbing, average gradient of 4-5%
- Dayuling to Wuling (58-80km): Similar to the Cuifeng to Wuling section on the west route
The advantage of the east route is a more even gradient without the steep climbs of the Cuifeng section on the west route; the disadvantage is the longer distance, requiring more energy reserves and a more conservative pace.
Gear Selection Recommendations
Gear Ratio Selection
A 34T or smaller chainring paired with a 32T or 34T largest cassette cog is strongly recommended. Even strong riders need light gearing on 8% gradients at 3,000 meters altitude.
Clothing Recommendations
Temperature differences in the mountains are large (25°C at the base, possibly only 5-10°C at Wuling). A short-sleeve jersey plus a lightweight windbreaker is recommended. Gloves and arm warmers are also important, as the perceived temperature on the descent can approach 0°C.
