“Periodization” is one of the most important concepts in training science. Simply put, it means strategically planning training intensity, volume, and recovery so the body reaches its peak at the right time. But periodization can be implemented in several ways—the three most common models—linear, block, and polarized—each have their advocates and their ideal use cases.

Model 2: Block Periodization

Each “block” typically lasts 2-4 weeks and focuses on a single primary training goal:

Model 3: Polarized Training
Basic Concept
Polarized training is not “periodization” in the traditional sense, but rather an intensity distribution strategy. The core idea is: training time should be concentrated at the “very easy” and “very hard” ends, avoiding the middle intensity.
The typical polarized distribution follows the 80/20 rule:
80% of training time → Z1-Z2 (easy aerobic)
0% of training time → Z3 (Tempo, deliberately avoided)
20% of training time → Z4-Z6 (high-intensity intervals)
Why Avoid Middle Intensity?
Research shows that middle-intensity (Tempo/Sweet Spot) training has the following characteristics:
- Produces fatigue disproportionately higher than the adaptation it delivers
- Not easy enough for full recovery
- Not hard enough to trigger maximal physiological adaptation
- Long-term, high-volume middle-intensity training leads to the “gray zone effect,” stalling progress

- Polarized base period + Block build period: Switching models based on the training phase
What matters is not dogmatically following a single model, but understanding the principles behind each model, and then finding the combination that best suits your goals, time, and physical response.
The best training plan is the one you can consistently execute.
