The Beauty of Taitung Triathlon Carnival: Experience the Purest Triathlon Spirit in the Paradise of the Back Mountains

賽事分析

The Best Starting Point for Triathlon Beginners

The Taitung Beauty Triathlon Carnival is held annually in Taitung County, usually scheduled in spring (March to April). It is a carnival-style event renowned for being "friendly" and "joyful" among Taiwan's triathlon races. Taitung boasts Taiwan's finest triathlon venue—Living Water Lake—combined with the stunning scenery of the East Rift Valley and coastline, as well as the unique warmth and slow-paced lifestyle of the Taitung people. This makes the event the top choice for many triathlon newcomers to complete their first triathlon, and a spiritual home that seasoned triathletes return to year after year.

The event typically draws between 2,000 and 3,000 participants, offering multiple categories including the standard distance (51.5 km), sprint distance (25.75 km), relay teams, and an experience category. The experience category covers a shorter distance (usually a 375-meter swim, 10 km bike, and 2.5 km run), making it the perfect entry point for complete beginners with no triathlon experience.

Swim Segment: A Reassuring Experience at Living Water Lake

Taitung's Living Water Lake is a man-made rectangular lake originally built as an international-standard rowing venue. The water is sourced from underground springs, kept clear through regular maintenance, with a depth of approximately 2 to 3 meters. The gently sloping shores make entry and exit easy. For many triathlon newcomers who fear open-water swimming, Living Water Lake provides a safe, controlled, and highly visible swimming environment.

The standard-distance swim course is 1,500 meters, typically set as a rectangular loop within the lake. Since the lake surface is calm and free of waves, unaffected by tides or currents, athletes can focus entirely on their swimming without worrying about water safety. Water temperatures in March and April range from about 22 to 25 degrees Celsius, and wearing a wetsuit can provide additional warmth and buoyancy.

Even so, basic open-water swimming skills remain essential. The splashing and jostling during a mass start, navigating in open water, and adjusting to distance perception different from a pool are all skills that need practice. It is recommended to do one or two acclimatization sessions at Living Water Lake before race day to familiarize yourself with the water temperature, entry point, and exit location.

Bike Segment: A Visual Feast Through the East Rift Valley

The bike segment is the most spectacular part of the Taitung triathlon. The course follows Provincial Highway 9 or rural roads around Taitung City, cutting through the heart of the East Rift Valley. Flanked by the green ramparts of the Central Mountain Range and the Coastal Mountain Range, with endless rice paddies and green fields beneath your wheels and layered mountain ridges in the distance—this scene moves many athletes competing in Taitung for the first time.

The course terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, with a cumulative climb of about 200 to 300 meters, making it a very beginner-friendly level of difficulty. However, note that Taitung's sun is intense; even in spring, midday temperatures can exceed 28 degrees Celsius. Sun protection and hydration during the bike segment cannot be taken lightly, with aid stations along the route providing water and sports drinks.

Taitung's roads are in excellent condition, with far less traffic than cities in western Taiwan, offering a comfortable and safe riding experience. The route passes numerous spectacular rice paddy vistas. March to April is the growing season for the first rice crop, and the lush green paddies glisten under the sun, set against distant mountains and white clouds—a postcard-perfect scene unique to Taitung. Some sections pass through indigenous tribal communities, where residents spontaneously cheer from the roadside—the warmest human touch of Taitung's triathlon culture.

Run Segment: The Final Test of Willpower

The run course typically follows the trails of Taitung Forest Park or Seaside Park. Taitung Forest Park (commonly known as the Black Forest) features extensive casuarina tree shade, offering precious cover from the heat. The flat, scenic trail between Pipa Lake and Living Water Lake is a stretch you can enjoy while running.

The 10-kilometer run, coming after the swim and bike, is the final physical and mental challenge. The first two kilometers after the transition are the hardest; your legs need time to adapt from the circular motion of cycling to the linear motion of running. It is recommended to warm up at a pace slower than your target for the first two kilometers, then gradually pick up speed once your body adjusts.

The atmosphere at Taitung's event is especially heartwarming, with large crowds of spectators and finishers gathering near the finish line. The announcer calls out the names of athletes approaching the finish one by one, and this personal attention makes every finisher feel valued and celebrated.

Registration, Transportation, and Accommodation

Registration typically opens four to five months before the race. The standard distance costs approximately NT$2,500 to 3,500, the sprint distance about NT$2,000 to 2,800, and the experience category around NT$1,500 to 2,000. Taitung is remote, so transportation requires advance planning. Flights from Taipei Songshan Airport to Taitung Fengnian Airport take about 50 minutes, but flights are limited and seats are hard to come by during race week. The train from Taipei to Taitung takes about four to five hours and is also a popular option. Driving from Kaohsiung takes about three hours and is the most convenient way to bring your gear.

For accommodation, hotels and guesthouses in Taitung City see a surge in demand on race weekend, so it is advisable to book immediately after confirming your registration. Stays near Tiehua Village and along the seaside road are the most convenient, within walking distance of the race venue.

Finishing Guide for Triathlon Beginners

For those competing in their first triathlon, here are key tips to ensure a smooth finish. First, keep your transition area setup simple; practice the process of putting on and taking off gear at home to reduce transition time. Second, plan your nutrition in advance; never try any new food or drink during the race. Third, set realistic goals—the primary objective for your first race is to finish safely, not to chase a time. Fourth, enjoy the process; this is the first time you cross the finish line as a triathlete, and every step is worth remembering.

The Taitung Beauty Triathlon Carnival, with its beginner-friendly race design, magnificent natural scenery, and warm local hospitality, perfectly embodies the core spirit of triathlon—not competing against others, but challenging and surpassing yourself. Completing your first triathlon in this paradise of the back mountains will be an unforgettable sporting journey.
