Back to A-Zhe from the opening. I later helped him prepare for his next 226, completely discarding the outdated depletion method and switching to the modern high-carb + taper approach. Throughout the entire week before the race, he ate well, slept well, and stood at the start line feeling sharp. His weight did go up 1.8 kg, but I’d already told him that was fuel and coolant. In that race, not only did he finish, but his late-race pace collapse was far less severe than last time—because his tank was genuinely full.
To every athlete reading this, I want to say: Pre-race glycogen loading has long since evolved past the point where you need to break yourself down first. All you need to do is:
- Calculate your carbohydrate target correctly at 8 to 12 grams per kilogram of body weight;
- Spread it across multiple meals over the 1 to 3 days before the race, choosing easily digestible carbs to top up;
- Taper seriously—stop pushing training;
- When you see the scale go up, smile and accept it—that’s your endurance reserve.
Get these four things right, and you’ll be able to stand on the start line with a full tank. This isn’t some mystical art—it’s exercise science that’s been repeatedly validated. You’re just using it correctly, at the right time.
One last thought: fueling is an extension of your training, not a last-minute cram session the night before the race. Treat carb-loading as part of your race preparation, rehearse it as seriously as you practice your pacing or tire changes, and you’ll find your late-race performance getting more and more stable. Here’s to your next race—may you hit the wall later than ever, or even cruise all the way to the finish, crossing the line with a smile.
