I often tell my athletes that the goal of a pre-race nutrition strategy isn’t to make you “run faster”—it’s to prevent your hard-earned fitness from being wasted on an avoidable nutritional mistake. The physical capacity you’ve built up through months of sweat deserves a pre-race plan that’s just as carefully prepared.
Keep these core points in mind: serious glycogen loading is only needed for longer events, modern practice eliminates the depletion phase, adjust pre-race meal portions based on timing, train your gut in advance, and rehearse all your fueling beforehand. Do these things, and you’re already ahead at the starting line—not because you’re stronger, but because you’ve filled your tank.

One final reminder that’s often overlooked: pre-race sleep and emotional state are also part of your “nutrition strategy.” No matter how perfect your carbohydrate plan is, if you’re too anxious to sleep the night before, or you try something untested that keeps you running to the bathroom, the results will suffer. Plan your nutrition early and rehearse your fueling in advance, so you can sleep peacefully the night before the race—that sense of “peace of mind” is itself the best race-day support you can give yourself.
