Yunlin Caoling: A Cycling Hidden Gem in the Yun-Jia Mountains

The Caoling area in Gukeng Township, Yunlin County, is one of the most important mountain leisure destinations in south-central Taiwan. Caoling is renowned for its geological wonders—the dramatic canyon terrain along the Qingshui River, with cliffs forming numerous waterfalls and deep pools. Combined with the surrounding hilly agricultural landscapes, it attracts large numbers of hikers and cycling enthusiasts alike.

Route Basic Information

Gukeng, the Hometown of Coffee

Gukeng is Taiwan’s most famous coffee-producing region. The coffee beans here are cultivated under Taiwan’s unique high-mountain climate, giving them a distinctive flavor. Setting off from Gukeng, you’ll pass large coffee plantations spread across the hillsides. During the coffee harvest season from October to November each year, the coffee cherries turn from green to red, creating a beautiful agricultural landscape.

Gukeng Township hosts the Taiwan Coffee Festival annually, the largest coffee-themed event in the country. If time permits before your ride, savoring a cup of freshly brewed Taiwanese coffee at a Gukeng coffee farm is the perfect way to start your journey.

Caoling’s Geological Wonders

After riding approximately 15 km from Gukeng, you enter the Caoling area, where the geological landscape is the highlight of the route:

Qingshui River Canyon

The Qingshui River has carved a canyon hundreds of meters deep. The rock walls on both sides display a variety of striking strata and folds, making this an important site for geological education in Taiwan. Riding along the road at the canyon’s edge, gazing down at the rushing river far below, is enough to make your heart race.

Caoling Waterfall

The Caoling area features several large waterfalls, the most famous being the “Caoling Grand Waterfall,” with a drop of 50 meters. During the high-water season, the flow is immense and the roar is deafening. A viewing platform near the waterfall offers the best vantage point for capturing the full panorama.

Caoling Sky Bridge

The Caoling scenic area has several suspension bridges spanning the canyon. Among them, the “Caoling Sky Bridge” stretches 116 meters, making it one of the longest high-altitude scenic suspension bridges in Taiwan. The view of the Qingshui River Canyon from the bridge is breathtaking, but you’ll need a good head for heights to fully enjoy the experience.

Yunlin Mountain Agricultural Landscapes

The agricultural scenery around Caoling is equally worth attention. This area is planted extensively with high-mountain tea, bamboo shoots, and various vegetables. The terraced farming on steep slopes showcases the hard work and ingenuity of Taiwanese farmers. Some farmsteads offer rural experience activities, giving visitors a glimpse into the daily life of Taiwan’s high-mountain agriculture.

Best Riding Seasons

• Spring (March–May): Fresh greenery in the mountains, abundant waterfall flow, and the most pleasant climate
• Autumn (October–November): Coffee harvest season, when the agricultural landscape is at its richest
• Avoid the summer typhoon season: During July–September, the canyon terrain is vulnerable to heavy rain, and roads may be closed
• Winter: The Yunlin mountains are cold in winter with occasional frost; road conditions require extra attention
