The risk, of course, exists: if Wærenskjold hadn’t taken 2nd that day, the entire day’s attacks would have been read as “wasted effort that burned out the teammates.” In competitive sport, evaluations often hinge on such a thin line.
XDS ASTANA: Quiet but Efficient
ASTANA didn’t dominate any segment of the storyline, yet put 5 riders in the top 30 (Kanter 4th, Gate 20th, Teunissen 22nd, Tejada 27th, Vinokurov 28th).
This shows their approach: don’t participate in the early pacing expenditure, but keep the entire group in the front of the peloton and collectively advance through the final 10-kilometer melee. From a resource efficiency standpoint, this is a very pragmatic approach—getting results comparable to the teams that did the work, without doing the work.
Kanter’s 4th place is the ceiling of this approach. They didn’t build him a true train (if they had, the results table would show an Astana rider just ahead of him), but they put him in the right place.
NETCOMPANY INEOS and COFIDIS: Second-Tier Teams Taking Over Early
These two teams were highly visible in the final 6 kilometers—INEOS for Godon, Cofidis for Fretin (with Benjamin Thomas pulling a turn).
As mentioned earlier, second-tier sprint teams taking over early has logic: pushing the speed to the limit compresses the advantage of top sprinters. But this approach has a cruel math: you take over early, so you must carry the speed with your teammates to the end, and your teammates usually aren’t as strong as Alpecin’s or Soudal’s. So in the final 2.5 kilometers, a stronger team takes over from you, and you’ve already burned out.
The result was Godon 8th, Fretin 13th. From a pure results standpoint, not ideal; but from a strategic standpoint, it was the only way they could possibly win.
NSN CYCLING TEAM: Girmay’s Support System
NSN put two riders in the top 10 (Girmay 3rd, Van Asbroeck 10th), a clear signal that their final-phase support system works. Van Asbroeck, a veteran sprinter/lead-out hybrid, finishing 10th usually means he delivered Girmay to a very forward position before easing off himself.
The problem is that this system can currently deliver Girmay to the podium, but not yet to the top step.
12. Individual Rider Stories
Tim Merlier: The Sprinter Who Doesn’t Need a Perfect Train
Let’s lay out the numbers:
- First win of this Tour edition
- Career 4th Tour de France stage win (previous: 2021, 2025)
- Career 8th Grand Tour stage win
- 10th consecutive race with a stage victory
That last number best captures his value. Ten consecutive races with a stage win isn’t about explosive power—it’s about repeatability. In professional cycling, many can win one race; winning at least one stage in 10 consecutive races across completely different routes, opponents, and weather conditions is another level of consistency.
And the way he won in Bordeaux is a microcosm of that consistency. No perfect train, boxed in, lost position, had to find his own gap. His post-race description captures the whole process: “a mess,” “they boxed me in everywhere,” then finding space to “let the legs breathe.”
This ability can’t be trained, or at least not through a training plan. It’s spatial awareness accumulated over hundreds of sprints—judging, at 60 km/h surrounded by bodies, which gap will open in 3 seconds.
Soren Wærenskjold and Uno-X’s Rise
Wærenskjold is the kind of rider that’s hard to categorize: he has a time trial background (large build, can sustain high power for long periods) yet can also place well in bunch sprints. This hybrid ability is especially valuable on a resource-limited team—because he can play different roles on different days.
The 2nd place on Stage 7 matters because it came at the worst possible moment for Uno-X: yellow just lost, leader DNS, teammates attacking all day. Finding his own position, executing his own sprint, and making the podium in that environment is a “leader-level” performance.
From a broader perspective, Uno-X’s Norwegian model (attacking strategy for visibility while developing homegrown riders) has been running for years. Stage 7 was a typical slice of that model: they didn’t win, but they got more than many teams that can’t win and don’t dare lose.
Biniam Girmay’s Green Jersey Obsession
Girmay is one of the most important stories of his generation—he broke the ceiling for African riders in top-level road racing and has proven he can compete in the highest-intensity sprints.
On Stage 7 he did two things: went all-out for 4th at the intermediate sprint (14 points) and took 3rd at the finish. From a points accumulation standpoint, he got a decent haul; but from a green jersey standpoint, his situation is difficult—Pedersen leads him by 59 points, and Pedersen’s strengths (can climb moderate hills, can score at intermediate sprints, can win “not-quite-pure” sprint stages) are exactly the ability combination the green jersey system rewards most.
From a tactical logic standpoint, Girmay has only one path to catch green: beat everyone except Pedersen outright on pure sprint stages, and don’t fall too far behind at intermediate sprints. In other words, he has to win, and win multiple times. 3rd place doesn’t help him.
Jasper Philipsen’s Frustration
Philipsen’s situation deserves sympathy and analysis.
He won in Bordeaux in 2023, so this finish isn’t unfamiliar; he has the world’s best final lead-out man; his team paced all day. All conditions were in place, and the result was 5th in two consecutive bunch sprints.
From a competitive psychology standpoint, this “everything is right but I can’t win” state is often more tormenting than an obvious mistake. Mistakes can be corrected; speed gaps can only be fixed by form returning.
But a three-week Grand Tour is long. When this stage ended, the Tour still had 14 stages left. At his level, opportunities will come again.
Baptiste Veistroffer: The Modern Tour’s “Escape Specialist”
What Veistroffer did this week deserves its own section.
Stage 5: he attacked solo from the flag drop. Stage 7: he went out from km 0 again, escaped for 157 kilometers, took first at the intermediate sprint, the only climbing point, and his second most aggressive rider award in three days.
In the modern Tour, this “escape specialist” role is increasingly hard to play. The peloton’s pacing ability is stronger, power data is more transparent, and the success rate of breakaways declines year by year. When a break’s maximum lead all day is 1’35", any experienced rider knows how it ends.
So why do it?
Because the value of professional cycling isn’t only in results. A team’s sponsor contracts are largely built on quantified metrics of “TV exposure time” and “brand visibility.” When Veistroffer spent 157 kilometers at the front of the frame, he bought LOTTO INTERMARCHE over three hours of global broadcast coverage—for a team that just lost its sprinter leader, that’s the only asset left to operate.
And from a purely sporting standpoint, this deserves respect. Averaging 44.9 km/h solo at the front for 100 kilometers, in temperatures above 30°C, knowing you’ll be caught and still accelerating once more before being caught—that’s not strategy, that’s professionalism.
That fist bump with Otruba at the end was probably the best image of the entire stage.
Jakub Otruba and the Wildcard Team’s Tour
Otruba’s contribution shouldn’t be overlooked either. CAJA RURAL-SEGUROS RGA is this edition’s wildcard team, and for such teams, every day of the Tour is an investor pitch.
At the Landiras intermediate sprint, he took 2nd (20 points); at Côte de Béguey, he took 2nd; he survived all 157 kilometers with Veistroffer. His teammate Fernando GAVIRIA took 14th in the final sprint—a former top-level sprinter, now fighting on a wildcard team.
This team’s Stage 7 covered both “at the front all day” and “top 15 in the final sprint.” For a wildcard team’s resources, that’s a fairly complete day.
13. Bordeaux and the Tour’s Sprinting Memory
A City Belonging to Sprinters
Bordeaux is a very old stop on the Tour de France. The wide roads along the Garonne, the flat urban terrain, and the complete absence of hills around the city have made it a sprint-stage finish since early on.
The two most representative Bordeaux finishes in recent years:

Merlier’s victory was Belgium’s 24th Tour de France stage win in Bordeaux.
The number 24 needs context to feel its weight. It means that in over a century of Tour history, the finish line in Bordeaux has been crossed first by a Belgian roughly once every four or five editions. And coincidentally, three years earlier (2023), the winner in Bordeaux was also Belgian—Philipsen—and this time, Merlier took the victory from Philipsen’s hands.
Belgium’s relationship with cycling is roughly like Brazil’s with football. From Eddy Merckx to Tom Boonen, from Philippe Gilbert to today’s Van Aert, Evenepoel, Merlier, and Philipsen, this small-population country’s ability to continuously produce top-level riders is one of the sport’s most stable constants.
The Wolfpack’s 14 Years
Zooming out one level: SOUDAL QUICK-STEP has won at least one stage in every Tour de France since 2013, totaling 40 wins across 14 editions.
Over those 14 years, the team’s sponsors have changed names, leaders have changed generations, and the roster has been almost entirely renewed—the only constant is the outcome of “win at least one stage at the Tour every year.” From a management standpoint, this continuity can only come from one thing: the team has a repeatable winning method, not reliance on a single genius.
Specifically, this method probably includes: long-term investment in sprinters and classics riders, bringing at least one rider capable of winning flat stages to the Tour every year, and a team culture willing to bear the cost of pacing from the middle of the stage. Stage 7’s performance was a standard execution of this method.
Darrigade, Ocaña, and the Memory of This Route
As mentioned earlier, this route passed through Ocaña’s adopted home of Mont-de-Marsan and the Landes where Darrigade was born. And the day before, Pogacar had just surpassed Darrigade’s record of 22 Tour stage wins.
From a narrative standpoint, this is a very Tour-like coincidence: the race’s route design is itself a walking history book. When ASO plans routes each year, beyond geography and commerce, they deliberately bring the race back to places with stories. When riders pass through Mont-de-Marsan, most probably don’t realize what they’re passing; but the broadcast will mention it, and the audience will remember—and that’s part of why the Tour has maintained its appeal for over a century.
14. Looking Ahead: Bergerac, the Green Jersey Battle, and the GC’s Recovery Rhythm
Another Flat Stage Tomorrow
Stage 8 was another flat stage to Bergerac. Two consecutive flat days have a clear meaning for the entire peloton: this is the most precious recovery window of the three-week race.
After consecutive high-intensity days in the Pyrenees, GC riders’ bodies are in a fragile state. Flat stages are fast (Stage 7 averaged nearly 47 km/h), but the power distribution is completely different—in high-speed group riding, riders in the pack can maintain high speed at relatively low power, which aids recovery.
The results proved it: after Stage 8, the top 15 in GC had exactly the same positions and gaps as after Stage 7, not a single second different. Two consecutive days, GC completely frozen.
The Green Jersey Trajectory
After Stage 8, the green jersey standings showed significant movement:

Merlier jumped from 4th to 2nd, adding 79 points in a single stage—showing he collected a large haul on Stage 8 as well. And Pedersen’s lead shrank from 59 points to 15.
After Stage 9, the picture changed again: PEDERSEN 268 / GIRMAY 223 / MERLIER 213 / PHILIPSEN 191 / KANTER 172. Girmay returned to 2nd, Merlier dropped back to 3rd.
This dramatic reshuffling shows one thing: the green jersey competition was far from settled at the end of week one. As long as pure sprint stages remain, any single sprint result can scramble the standings. Pedersen’s advantage is that he can score on more types of stages, but his lead isn’t large enough to relax.
GC’s Next Checkpoint
From the Stage 7 GC table, besides Pogacar, 2nd through 9th are packed between 2’42" and 4’57". This density means every upcoming mountain stage will produce real movement.
After Stage 9 comes this edition’s first rest day (7/13), followed by Stage 10 on July 14—Bastille Day—from Aurillac to Le Lioran in the Massif Central. Bastille Day stages are traditionally the day French riders most want to win, and the Massif Central’s short, steep climbs are particularly suited to successful breakaways.
In other words, the calm of Stage 7 exists to make way for the next storm.
15. A Taiwanese Rider’s Perspective: Learning Flatland Cruising from Bordeaux
This section is for people who actually ride. Stage 7’s value for Taiwanese riders isn’t “who won,” but that it’s the best three-hour textbook for studying flatland technique all year.
1. Why Flat Stages Are What You Should Study Most
Most Taiwanese riders spend 80% of their training and racing time on flat roads—commuting, riverside paths, the west coast highway, the east coast, long-distance rides around Hualien-Taitung. Real climbing days might happen a few times a month. Yet we spend far more time studying climbing technique (cadence, seated vs. standing, watts per kilo) than flatland technique.
Stage 7’s first lesson: all the differences on flat roads happen in aerodynamic drag.
In the 45-60 km/h range, the power required to overcome wind resistance accounts for roughly 85-90% or more of total power. This means on flat roads, “whose wheel you’re on” matters more than “what your FTP is.” A rider with a 250-watt FTP can easily hold 45 km/h in a group; the same rider solo might not hold 35 km/h for half an hour.
2. Comparable Taiwanese Routes
If you want a route to experience what Stage 7 felt like, here’s my recommendation:
Provincial Highway 61 (west coast expressway, cycling-accessible sections) / Provincial Highway 17
The closest match to the Landes. Long straights, few traffic lights, flat terrain, open views on both sides, and the wind is the protagonist. The northeast monsoon (winter) and southwest wind (summer) on the west coast create conditions similar to southwestern France: sometimes a tailwind lets you cruise at 40+ with no effort, while the return headwind makes even 25 painful. If you want to practice crosswind rotating, to feel what “switching sides to block the wind” actually means, the west coast is Taiwan’s best classroom.
Provincial Highway 11 (east coast, Hualien-Taitung)
Long distance, gentle undulations, good road surface. It’s more like the “second half” of this stage than the west coast—a bit of small rolling terrain (similar to Côte de Béguey’s grade), but overall still cruising. The Pacific sea breeze is also a variable.
Hualien-Taitung Loop (Provincial Highway 9 through the East Rift Valley)
If you want to simulate the overall rhythm of this stage—175 km, 850 m of climbing—the long flat sections of the East Rift Valley are very close. Wide roads, few cars, and the ability to hold steady power for long periods make it ideal for “long-distance tempo training.”
Sun Moon Lake Loop
Not flat, but the ~30 km loop with continuous rolling terrain is great for practicing “steady output through undulations”—that is, not exploding on every small climb and then resting on the descent. This ability is most critical for a stage like Stage 7, where “850 meters of climbing is spread across 175 kilometers.”
Riverside bike paths (Dahan River, Xindian River, Dajia River, etc.)
The safest place to practice group rotating. But watch out for pedestrians and slow riders; keep speeds within safe limits.
3. Positioning: The Most Important Lesson for Amateur Riders
The most instructive part of Stage 7 is the single-lane narrowing at 7.2 kilometers from the finish.
This scenario plays out daily in Taiwanese races and group rides: an intersection narrowing, a construction section, a convergence point before a bridge. Professional riders handle it by starting to move forward 1-2 kilometers before the narrow point, not waiting until they’re at the back when they reach it.
Specific operational principles:
- Recon in advance. Knowing the route is free power. Knowing where it narrows, where the corners are, where the climb starts, lets you spend energy at the right time instead of reacting passively.
- Move forward on the downwind side in crosswinds. With a crosswind, the group naturally squeezes to the downwind side. To move forward, going upwind is painful; going downwind lets you get some shelter.
- Don’t linger on the outside edge. The outside of the group is where wind resistance is highest and where you’re most likely to get squeezed out. Move decisively, then cut back in once you’ve gained position.
- The top-20 principle. In amateur races, if you’re not in the top 20 before a key point (narrow road, corner, climb start), you’ve essentially removed yourself from contention.
4. Designing a “Flatland High-Speed Cruising” Workout with Power/Heart Rate
Stage 7’s speed distribution is an excellent basis for workout design: breakaway’s first 100 km at 44.9 km/h, full escape at 46.3 km/h, final kilometers around 60 km/h. Translated into training language, this is a structure of “long Tempo/Sweet Spot + anaerobic burst at the end.”
Here are three workouts you can use directly. Power zones are expressed as FTP percentages, heart rate as HRmax percentages; if you don’t have a power meter, use heart rate plus RPE.
Workout A: Breakaway Simulation (Endurance Type)

This workout simulates the physiological demands of “two riders rotating for 157 kilometers”: long periods near threshold but not over, with the emphasis on steadiness rather than explosiveness. Recommended on the west coast or East Rift Valley where you can ride without stopping for long stretches. If you have a teammate, rotating every 2 minutes is closer to reality.
Workout B: Peloton Pacing Simulation (Rhythm Type)

Those 1-minute surges every 10 minutes simulate the power fluctuations of a peloton “easing off when the gap shrinks / pushing when the gap grows.” In real racing, you rarely hold perfectly steady power—training shouldn’t only train steadiness either.

The key to this workout is that Main set 2 must be done in a fatigued state. Real bunch sprints never happen on fresh legs; Merlier had already ridden 175 kilometers before his final 200-meter burst. If your sprint training always happens when you’re freshest after warm-up, what you’re training is disconnected from race demands.
5. Practical Details of Rotating and Drafting
The two-man breakaway holding 44.9 km/h for 100 kilometers on Stage 7 is almost inconceivable in the amateur world. But the principles of rotating can be directly applied:
- Wheels close but safe. Pros might leave only 10-20 centimeters; amateurs should keep at least half a wheel’s distance, and never overlap wheels (your front wheel past the side of the rider ahead’s rear wheel).
- Short pulls, smooth changes. In two-rider rotation, each rider pulls for 30 seconds to 1 minute before swapping—far more efficient than one rider pulling for 5 minutes. When swapping, move to the side, ease off, drift to the back; the motion should be smooth, no sudden braking.
- Switch sides in crosswinds. Wind from the left, sit on the right-rear of the rider ahead; wind from the right, sit on the left-rear. This is the most commonly overlooked point by Taiwanese riders—on the west coast, if you don’t switch sides, you’ll find “drafting but not feeling any easier.”
- Move up proactively before climbs. Groups naturally compress when entering a climb; being too far back gets you dropped. Stage 7’s Côte de Béguey is a miniature version of this principle.
6. Hydration Rhythm in Heat
Temperatures were above 30°C on this stage, with the peloton at high speed all day. This is the most relatable part for Taiwanese riders—our summer training environments are only harsher.
From observing the race, several principles emerge:
- Drink when the road allows, not when you’re thirsty. Pros don’t reach for bottles before narrow roads, corners, or climb starts. Same in Taiwan: traffic lights and straight, gentle sections are the times to drink.
- Flat stages are actually harder for hydration. Because speeds are high, the group is dense, and taking hands off the bars is risky. In practice, do all your feeding on long straight cruising sections.
- Electrolytes matter more than calories in heat. On rides over three hours in high temperatures, replacing sugar without sodium is a primary cause of cramping.
- Cooling strategies. Pros use ice socks and pouring cold water over their heads; Taiwanese riders can pour cold water over forearms and the back of the neck at rest stops—these two areas are most effective for lowering perceived temperature.
16. Viewing Summary
Stage 7 is the kind of day most people will forget within three days—no GC changes, no dramatic crashes, no crosswind echelons, all top 30 finishers in the same time. In terms of news value, it was nearly the most uneventful day of this edition.
But if you treat it as a lesson, this day was packed.
It demonstrated the art of pacing. SOUDAL and ALPECIN locked the break at a minute and a half all day, deliberately eased off after the intermediate sprint, and timed the reeling-in to the second. This invisible work is where the real technical content of flat stages lies.
It demonstrated the value of escape. Veistroffer and Otruba traded 157 kilometers at 44.9 km/h for three hours of screen time, a most aggressive rider award, and that fist bump before being swallowed. Zero by results, full marks by the logic of professional sport.
It demonstrated the essence of sprinting. Alpecin delivered a textbook train, Philipsen launched at a reasonable point, and was beaten by a man who was boxed in all day and had to find his own gap. Position matters, but legs matter more; and on a long straight where the finish line only appears at 560 meters, “launching late” is itself a positional advantage.
It demonstrated how resource-limited teams survive a Grand Tour. UNO-X filled the wound of losing yellow with a full day of attacks and took 2nd; LOTTO INTERMARCHE, after losing its sprinter leader, pocketed the most aggressive rider award two days running; a wildcard team like CAJA RURAL had someone at the front escaping all day and someone sprinting into the top 15 at the finish.
And for Taiwanese riders, the most practical takeaway is shattering the illusion that “flat roads are easy.” 175 kilometers, 46.8 km/h average, above 30°C, final kilometers at 60 km/h—put together, these numbers show that flat stages demand a different kind of completeness: wind resistance management, positional awareness, hydration rhythm, and the ability to produce 15 seconds of all-out sprint after three hours of fatigue.
Next time you’re on the west coast facing the wind, or rotating in a line through the East Rift Valley, think about that Garonne long straight in Bordeaux where the finish line only appeared at 560 meters—and the Belgian who was boxed in until the last moment, yet still found the gap and surged through.
Flat roads were never simple.
