“Does he go by feel, or is there a logic to it?”
Every time Tadej Pogačar stands up and surges out of the bunch, that question gets asked. In the 2026 season, he left behind several attacks with clear positions and distances, which we can line up and try to find the pattern in.
Let’s be clear about the method first: The distances and locations below are from public records; the “logic” inferred is based on this article’s analysis of those data points, not statements from the rider or his team.
The Five Attack Points of the 2026 Season

78 km, 55 km, 24.2 km, 7.2 km—the range is staggering. The same rider, in the same season, can launch attacks with distances differing by more than a factor of ten.
So the statement “he likes to attack from very far out” is actually wrong. The truth is more like: where he attacks is determined by that day’s terrain and rivals, not by habit.
Pattern One: The Attack Point Always Sits on a Terrain Difficulty
Looking at all five locations together, the strongest commonality isn’t distance—it’s the nature of the location:
- Monte Sante Marie is one of Strade Bianche’s most infamous gravel sectors
- The Cipressa is the first of the final two decisive climbs in San Remo
- The Oude Kwaremont is the signature cobbled climb of the Tour of Flanders
- La Redoute is the classic hard climb of Liège
- The Col du Glandon is the high-mountain segment of Tour S14
Not once was an attack launched on flat roads, with a tailwind, or on featureless terrain.
Behind this is a very simple physical reason (this falls under general principles): the slower the speed, the smaller the proportion of energy saved by drafting. When riding at high speed on the flat, hiding behind someone else saves a considerable amount of effort; but once speed drops on a steep climb, aerodynamic drag’s share of total resistance falls dramatically. At that point, the “drafting” dividend is compressed, and the extra cost paid by the attacker becomes much smaller.
Gravel and cobbles add a second layer of effect: the road surface itself creates gaps. Any loss of grip, any line choice error, can force the rider behind to spend extra energy on another acceleration. If the attacker goes first on such a section, the chasers behind have to do repeated accelerations on unstable terrain—the most draining thing there is.
Pattern Two: How Many Rivals Are Left Determines How Early to Attack
Compare the two extremes of Strade Bianche and Milan-San Remo:
- Strade Bianche: went with 78 km remaining, and went alone all the way. This is “I’ll use distance to eliminate everyone.”
- Milan-San Remo: went with 24.2 km remaining, and still needed a 200-meter sprint to win by half a wheel. This is “I can only go here, and going isn’t enough—I still have to win again.”
If a race gives you many opportunities on terrain, and they come early, you can use distance as a weapon; if a race compresses its decisive terrain into the final 30 km like San Remo, attacking any earlier is just wasted effort.
The Tour of Flanders is the middle ground: with 55 km left, the first real split happened, but two riders were still there (van der Poel, Evenepoel). Then the Paterberg dropped one, and the final Oude Kwaremont ascent dropped the other—and at the summit, the lead was only 6 seconds.
This is a crucial detail: attacks within the same race are often not a single move, but a sequence. The purpose of the first attack is often not to win, but to reduce the number of riders on your wheel from ten to two.
Pattern Three: Leave Room to “Deal with the Hanger-On”
The Liège-Bastogne-Liège record happens to demonstrate this perfectly.
After attacking on the Côte de La Redoute, only Paul Seixas could follow, and the two pulled clear together. The real split came on the final climb, the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons, ultimately winning by 45 seconds, with Evenepoel taking 3rd at 1’42" back.
In other words, the first attack point (La Redoute) does the filtering, and the final climb (Roche-aux-Faucons) does the deciding. Between the attack point and the finish, there must be at least one more hard enough section of terrain, otherwise the rider who follows will tail you all the way to the line, turning your attack into their free ride.
This also explains why the 7.2 km solo on Tour S14 worked—it was the final stretch before the summit, with no terrain left behind for chasers to organize.
Pattern Four: Distance Isn’t Courage, It’s Calculation
It’s easy for outsiders to see “attacking with 78 km to go” as a display of raw aggression. But line up the four locations and you see the opposite: they all look like answers to the same question—“On this route, what’s the most effective tool I have?”
- Terrain is plentiful, early, and fragmented → use distance (Strade Bianche)
- Terrain is concentrated at the end → use the final two climbs (San Remo)
- Terrain repeats → break it down piece by piece, reducing the group each time (Tour of Flanders)
- A hard climb remains after the attack point → filter first, then decide (Liège)
- It’s already the final climb → just go (Tour S14)
How Taiwanese Riders Can Use This
Our routes are different, but the logic can be carried over:
- Attack on the climb, not on the flat. On the flat you won’t drop anyone; you’ll only burn yourself.
- Check what terrain remains after your attack point. If you open a gap just one kilometer before Kunyang on Wuling, there’s nothing left behind to help you extend the gap; conversely, if you start applying pressure from Cuifeng, you need to be sure you can hold on for everything that follows.
- Accept that “the first attack isn’t necessarily the last.” Setting a goal of “cutting the group from eight to two” is far more practical than “dropping everyone at once.”
- Training and intensity planning vary significantly between individuals; any pacing strategy should be built up gradually and adjusted according to your own condition.
There’s ultimately no mystery to attack timing: read the road first, then read the riders, and only then decide at which kilometer to stand up.
