- Deliberately hold back power for the first 2 km—don’t exceed 105% of your target pace.
- Stop at The Junction to refill water—it’s the only reliable water source on the route.
- Use the corner rhythm method in the second half: grind through the steep inside, spin smoothly out of the corner, and don’t stand and sprint on the steep insides.
- Shift to your easiest gear 500 meters before the end, ready to eat that 16% hundred-yard wall.
- Put on your windbreaker at the summit before descending—don’t bomb down in a soaked jersey.
- Touch that rock in the tower and take a photo. You’ve just completed one of the most-pilgrimaged climbs in America.
